Tell them to go pound sand
You are a public official. No one asks the governor to see his driver license when he is acting in his official capacity; nor should you be asked to provide yours. If they want to verify your credentials they can take it up with the SOS. That is a total violation of privacy and for them to tell the notary that they could jeopardize the funding of the loan if they don't comply is a new all time low.

Amen to that...
That's what I've been doing lately, too... if they need verification of my signature, they can call the CA Secretary of State. They don't need to see my driver license.
Now... if the SOS issued a specific Notary ID card, I'd happily give them a copy of that. But since they dont...

Re: Amen to that...
Your id has nothing to do with the loan.
Could it be a mistake? Could they be wanting the borrowers id?

Re: Amen to that...
No, more and more companies are asking for copies of both. Weird, but true.

I've copied --mistakes and all-- an item from Prospect Mortgage Lenders Closing Instructions:
2. Notary to provide Basic form of ID: (Drivers License) and A copy of their notary license. 3. Notary to provide Basic form of ID: (Drivers License) and A copy of their notary license.
Yes, it was listed twice and when I questioned this I was told it is a lender's requirement for funding. I was happy to provide a copy of my notary commission but when scanning my DL I blocked out every bit of info except my name and the expiration date.
What's next? A copy of our BGC included with the returned docs?

Agreed!
"What's next?"
Maybe they'll want a DNA sample, too...
I can't think of a single valid justification for requesting our DL for the loan to fund. It's not like we're the ones applying for the loan. I've seen that before, too, but more often a request for my address. I will give them my commission number (and a copy of that, if they want it) and the county in which it's recorded, but that's all. If they want more than that, they can go dig for it, if they feel it's so necessary.
I imagine that their concern is to be sure that we're duly commissioned notaries authorized by our state to do our jobs, but - at least in California - our stamp should be proof enough. (Here we're required to keep our stamp under our exclusive control at all times.) If we had to provide that info to everyone for whom we notarize a signature, can you imagine how many copies of our IDs would be floating around out there? I shudder to think...

Totally....
I mean, if you think about it... for those of us in CA, the seal is WAY more of an ID than our DL could be. I mean, it's not like we can just order one... we have to get a permission slip from the SOS every time we do it. We have to keep them locked up and in our control, etc.
You'd *think* that the seal itself is sufficient.
I know it is when I walk in to a jail... I tell them I'm a notary, and they ask to see my stamp.

I refused to do their signing because of this requirement which they would'T recant, not even for me. LOL

That is ridiculous. If they asked me for mine I would tell them I don't have one, that I have a driver that drives me to appointments:)
(Last couple of years that I did signings, my husband drove me to the appointments - I do have a drivers license but no longer drive)

I was at an appt yesterday and the borrowers told me that they were supposed to sign on Friday, and the notary showed up by taxi and she had to wait for a ride to pick her up at the end. It was a no-sign because the notary could not answer some basic questions and the L/O and TC were not returning calls. Don't know if this notary had a driver's license or not.

Now that's really weird. How did that person expect to gain
any credibility. Of course, there are those who lose D/L's because of DUI's, etc.

Tell the borrower they can't have $ because notary ...
doesn't have a drivers license.
I would LOVE to hear the Fed's take on that one. Headliner news:
Although the underwriter qualified the borrowers for the loan, their home mortgage refinance came to a halt because the notary public who took their acknowledgment on the mortgage deed did not prove he could drive a car.
