Question for CT notaries
I have a refi closing on Monday for a CT property.
I know CT requires a witnesses on mortgages (or is it a deed of trust in CT?).
Can the notary witness as well as notarize the signatures or is the witness required to be someone other than the notary?
TIA

It's a mortgage, two witnesses and the notary can be one..

Thanks Linda
That's not what PAW's website says, but I do believe you since you are from CT.

That's my recollection unless it's changed since I left in
2006 - maybe Ernest, John or Bobbi will chime in..

I will probably go ahead and get two witnesses, whether they are required or not. The closing is taking place in her office, so I hope it will not be too difficult to line up witnesses.
The title company was not aware of any witness requirements (they are not in CT).

Yes, Linda, you are correct.
Paul was referring to the Stewart Title Underwriter's Handbook. He and I had an extensive exchange on this subject, with no clear-cut agreement. In any case, the instructions from a number of services remind us of the two witness requirement. You can be one, anyone else (including family members ... as well as NBS not on title or named in any other document) can be the second witness.

Thanks for the corroboration, John
Now I will be prepared when the closing is rescheduled for later next week.

John is right. The Town Clerks will not accept mortgages for recording without 2 witness, other than the signing parties. 1 may be the notary.
