Web Advertising strategy

I have been spending lots of time dabbling with Google and Bing (MS) paid advertisements. It seems this area is dominated by the larger players such as Notary Rotary, the #'s site and of course XYZ. As times have gotten tougher it seems like the bid prices are increasing and the click through ratios are dropping.

As most of us are small and local business persons, I am beginning to think the best strategy may be to just maintain premium listings on the best Notary directories and let them battle it our for the top spots on Google, Bing & Yahoo. I am fortunate to have some solid regular Escrow/Title clients but would love to pick up more general Notary work. Of course the profit margins on general Notary work do not allow for a large ad budget.

Are there any web ad gurus out there that can offer their opinion's on this topic?

My recent strategy...

Last week I signed up with an online marketing service.... so far so good! 11 new orders from 3 new clients that I never worked for before... Also started calling some old clients that I haven't heard from in a while!

Just a suggestion

There are things that you can do within the coding of your website which will get the attention of the spiders that search the sites and move the placement of your website to the top pages.

You need to do some reading and it takes time but it has to do with metatags and key words. If inserted often and properly you website can be on the first page or two when people do a search.

Don,

I put myself in my area's Google maps listing. That way should someone search for a notary in my area, my name and a link to my website will pop up. I've gotten calls from this strategy and the best part is that it costs absolutely nothing (but your time).
