What would you do?
I did a signing today at a bank (it was a nice change) and I was there 10 minutes early ready to go. The borrowers showed up 15 minutes late and then they wanted to go over all the numbers with a calculator and had a ton of questions. The loan officer came in and it was clear that he had NO IDEA what he was doing. It actually got a little heated. The LO stepped out of the office and I followed and politely told him that this should have already been taken care of and that I had another appt right after this one (45 minutes since scheduled time had passed). He then told me that "it wasn't his problem and that he wouldn't let a 300K loan go because I had another appt". I then went and told the borrowers that I had another appt and that they could either sign right then or reschedule. They decided to sign. I think that I was a little too tolerant in this situation, I am curious to see what everyone else would have done.

who hired you to do the job? The bank, SS, etc I would have a different answer depending on who the hiring party was..

"I then went and told the borrowers that I had another appt and that they could either sign right then or reschedule. "
Though I can't blame you, I hope you were a little more diplomatic than that. You say "I think I was a little too tolerant in this situation" - based on the tenor of this post, if this is how you handled it, I don't see any tolerance at all and I think you can forget ever being called by this lender again.
I do agree that waiting 45 minutes is ridiculous - maybe you should have advised the LO when his borrowers were 10 minutes late that you had another apppointment so he could handle it accordingly. Sounds like he didn't really do his job to begin with if his clients were so badly uninformed.
Would it have been possible for you to call your next appointment and push them back an hour or so? Just another thought to try to not burn bridges.
Just a thought.

Of course I said it nicer then that, typing comes off a lot different then the actual words. I didn't feel is necessary to repeat the whole conversation verbatim. No, I could not push my other one back. I think that waiting 45 minutes and not having one doc signed is very tolerate. I have 6 signings already confirmed with this lender. We have a great repore and I am not concerned in the least about the lender not calling again. The borrower was great and thanked me several times. Thanks for your input.

if you already have 6 signings lined up, does it really
matter what we think? Congrats!

6 lined up providing the lender is still happy....
always subject to change, as we all know too well.

I had the same situation yesterday with another appt. right behind - I spoke to the BO's when they first sat down and told them I wouldn't be rushing them as I had scheduled properly (to my way of thinking) but that my GD's graduation was very important. All through the signing Mrs. kept telling Mr. to "sign, don't talk, she has to get to graduation." What a hoot! They saved all their questions that I couldn't answer for after I left. Bless those great folks.
And yes, I was more diplomatic as I am sure you were also Heather, but to convey quickly without fuss is sometimes easier. I got it.....and I believe Linda did too but her inner teacher was creeping out into our sunlight. She didn't (I believe) mean to sound like a grinch, so cut my FL buddy some slack...LOL.

hit button too soon...maybe it would've depended upon the
type of loan signing, as some take way longer than say a simple refi. But then again, perhaps it doesn't matter, because for me, in the end, I would've done everything possible, including pushing back my other appts, to try to save the signing...regardless who hired me. That's just moi.
Not that I have all the patience in the world BUT, its the borrowers home, they need the loan, and the fact that the LO screwed up, makes me more obligated to help them out, especially during these economic times. I personally feel it is part of my job to do all that I can to help them out.
Plus, why risk losing the SS or TC as a client. Cause like it was said earlier, things change very fast in this biz. One day your scheduled for 6, the next day or next month, your phone is collecting dust.

Employee mentality vs contractor:not too much you can do
other than what you did- good thing it all worked out! Most of the time people are late at banks and real estate offices....I try and get there right on time....no reason for me to be early.
I have been to many closings that the LO's or Realtors have no clue about the HUD or cant explain APR or how the tax prorations work. Here I am...making the least with most amount of knowledge. Plan accordingly...it will happen again!!!

Heather, I think you did the right thing. A few months ago I had one in a bank with the L/O present and the first 30 minutes was spent with borrower asking L/O the same questions over and over and over. I had another appointment right afterward, so after 30 minutes of that crud I said in the sweetest voice, "I have another appointment right after this one. We've now been here for 30 minutes without signing a single document. At this point I need to know if we are going to proceed with the signing. If you need more time to review the documents, then we'll have to reschedule for later in the day."
I don't think B liked that but she did begin signing. I wasn't sorry - she'd eaten up too much time with asking the same questions ad nauseam, just rephrasing them each time! She would have kept on and on had I not put a stop to it.
