checking me out - a first
Today I went to do a signing and the borrower refused to sign until he verified who I was. That was so funny. He called the secretary of state, on hold for ten mins then the police department. He wanted to know where my office was, when I told him I worked out of my home and he could go on the internet, he said that's where all the scams come from. After an hour, he still couldn't verify, no sign. Yes I showed a copy of my commission but it didn't have my picture on it. I told him at least I didn't have a mask on......he didn't think that was funny. LOL oh well, there's a first time for everything.

What did the police tell him?

In Oakland, he would have to call a taxi if he wanted to get a response

You let that BS go on for an hour?
I would have given him maybe 5 minutes and one phone call to the SOS, and if that didn't satisfy him, sayonara.

Re: You let that BS go on for an hour?
could the TC or lender have did a conference call to convince him that you were there at their request? i would have left much sooner. you should, of course, be paid your full fee because his refusal had nothing to do with the loan.

You waited an hour for this?
The fact that you showed up with his docs didn't help?
I know I'm not supposed to be laughing, but I can't help it. I know that I will end up with this guys brother next week for laughing, but still.
Maybe you should have shown him a copy of your recent court paperwork.
And Yes, Yes, tell us what the police told him.

You mean to tell me that you live in CA and you have not been part of the "radical" culture that is CA enough that the police know you by name? I'm a Texan, I thought that was a prerequisite for living in California. LOL (... j/k no hate mail please )
I don't know, just for giggles, and if I had the time, I would have probably been standing there when he got off the phone with one police station saying, "Here, try this one, they gotta know me! Be sure to ask them about New Year's eve 2007 - I KNOW I made an impression that night!"
Someone said it before, we really should get together and write a book about some of these visits. I'm game if anyone has expertise in doing this in a way that we all get credit (and fair % or sales, of course Sorta like a Chicken Soup for the Notary Signing Agent's Soul

His wife and kids were embarrassed but the real problem as I saw it was he really didn't want to sign the papers and was using that as an excuse.
LO/TC were both in shock. Bottom line, he inherited the house from his parents. His name only. Wife and kids wanted him to sign papers and he didn't. They initiated the process....I personally agreed with him once I realized what was going on... He left me sitting in me car on the phone with the LO......TO GO TO THE RACE TRACK! LOL

Didn't he have to sign the original papers to get the
process started? Or was it one of those situations where he didn't know how to say no to the family until the very last min?
In a year from now, I think it might be considered a "creative" way to say "Go away, I'm not signing anything." Not so much today, but in a year or so maybe.

Wow!
The only time I've been asked for ID was solved by having the borrower talk to the Loan Officer.

After about 5 minutes of that nonsense, I would have given him a bogus # and told him to call and verify my identity with my parole officer, and walked out.

I had one a few years ago where I was instructed by the TC to hold my D/L up against the window so the BO could verify it was me. They gave her my name and address, and she wanted to match that to my D/L before she let me in. The fact that I was carrying the loan documents apparently meant nothing...

If I had been in a "mood" and had the time I would have waited to see how it played out. Just for giggles. Don't really want to bring this up, but do you think race was a factor? This really should have been taken care of by a call to the Company that hired you.

Bill and I have had this happen twice. We carry a copy of our commissions with us and that seems to have satisfied them along with the question "How do you suppose we got your loan documents"? This did happen a third time a few years ago, but it became obvious very quickly that the woman had no intention of signing the documents no matter what kind of proof we had that we were legitimate. She was rude and a little nuts. When we realized what she was doing, we called the TC and advised them that we were leaving the premises at her request.

No race issue, we're both black. In the black community there is a lot of distrust when a black person is doing a @@@@ person's job.

Usually a business card and your notary seal will do the trick. I can't blame people for being suspicious. Being 72 years old helps too. Everyone trusts seniors because we have nothing to lose.

Yet another instance of the LO failing to do their job. I'd be uncomfortable, too, if a stranger just showed up on my doorstep with loan documents they wanted me to sign. The LO should have talked to the borrower the day before or whatever, going over terms and explaining that a signing agent will be sent to their house at X time with the final documents to sign. After a few minutes, I would have just said "I can see you're not ready to sign. Please call your loan officer to reschedule your appointment when you are ready. If you are not comfortable with a signing agent coming to your home, ask your loan officer if there is a physical office you can go to instead."
