Fax component of HP 3330 biting the dust?
I keep getting communication error 388. I searched the manual but couldn't find anything.

The manual doesn't contain the error codes. The link Linda provided is what I have also.
You may not be having a problem at all, it may be a noisy phone line or a compatibility problem with the other machine. Have you tried sending a fax to another number? (I get them occasionally trying to send a fax to eFax and K7 e-fax numbers.)

If you can sent to another fax number, then you will have your answer.
PAW mentioned noise on the phone line. A couple of years ago, my fax (not your brand) quit working properly and I got frequent error codes. I also began to notice a little static on my phone line. Called the phone company and they found that the connection at the street was not properly done and over time, moisture got into it and finally degraded the connection to the point where we were getting static. The fax was the first to have issues, I guess, because it is the most noise sensitive.

Thank you all for your help
It probably was an incompatibility with the efax number. It worked great with another number.
