Re: International Driver Licenses
This came up some a while back. I found an interesting document which discusses International Driving Permits, which ARE valid documents when issued by the appropriate authority. In the US, IDPs are issued by either AAA or AATA, and cost around $15. The original license must accompany the document. The IDP serves basically as a translation of the driver license making inspection of the license easier in foreign countries.
IDPs issued to U.S. drivers can not be used in the U.S. However, drivers from other countries who possess an IDP and original DL issued in their home country can use the documents in the U.S., although they must always accompany each other. In those states where notaries do not have laws specifying the types of acceptable ID, notaries should be very cautious when accepting IDPs, and the original license should accompany it. U.S. license holders can not use their IDPs as valid ID in the U.S.
Here is the article: http://www.fraternalorderoflawenforcement.com/pdfs/International_Drivers_Permit.pdf
I actually do have an IDP which I obtained from my local AAA office.

Re: International Driver Licenses
These can be obtained from anyone Robert. There's a company in NY that sells these to the locals. Utterly useless here in the US.

Re: International Driver Licenses
If indeed, Cari, there is a company selling them besides the two listed, they are not in compliance with the US Govt. It must be one of the two FLNotary2 listed. Period.

How to Apply for an International Driving Permit
Before departure, you can obtain an IDP at a local office of one of the two automobile associations authorized by the U.S. Department of State:
AAA (American Automobile Association) National Auto Club

Re: International Driver Licenses
"In many countries (BUT NOT IN THE U.S.) a visitor who wishes to drive is required to have an IDP."
and
"Any resident of a country that participates in the treaty may legally drive in the United States carrying only their valid license from their country of residence. IDPs are not required in the United States."
Like I wrote earlier, utterly useless in the U.S.....same goes for the IDL's...which was the topic for discussion a few weeks back.

Re: International Driver Licenses
Some states may not be clear on this issue but the CA handbook is very clear and concise on this issue - and says only driver's licenses from the U.S., Canada and Mexico are acceptable so there's no debate, argument, or discussion with the customer/client/borrower - they are out of luck.

Again I'm just guessing BUT I'd say it's to make
it clear that there are only 2 entities allowed to make this transactions...exactly what Julie said. I wasn't aware of that and there are many many on the net that say they can do this. The OP was a warning that's NOT the case and for me I appreciate the time.

My point was
that only AAA and AATA are authorized in the U.S. to issue International Driving Permits.
Those fancy documents sold at NY storefronts or on http://internationalda.com/ or http://www.idl-international.com/, are fake and fraudulent.
