Stupid Newbie Question

I don't know why this just recently occurred to me, but I was finishing up a signing last week, and it just popped into my head.

When I prepare for a signing, I generally go through the docs and put sticky flags on the documents to mark where to sign. I also paper clip individual document pages together to make it easier to go through at the table.

My question is, do the title folks get pissed off if we leave the paper clips in place? It just dawned on me that if they want to just pop the documents on the copier to copy, they'd have to remove the paper clips first. Should I remove the paper clips before shipping the docs? Does it even matter?

Like I said, it's kind of a stupid newbie question. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before I had 60+ signings under my belt *laughs*

I would not send any docs back paperclipped. I use sticky flags on the 1003 and maybe also on something quirky here and there where I think we might miss a date that is in a weird spot. I'm always careful to remove all sticky flags before sending docs back. If I need to attach a voided check then I will tape it to the document that requires it (such as ACH form).

Thanks for the reply. I always remove my sticky flags, but it never occurred to me for the paper clips until a few days ago *blushes*.

I really am very smart, but sometimes things just don't line up in my head right *laughs*.

Not a stupid question. Naw I wouldn't send them back paper clipped (must have been kinda heavy-LOL).

Actually, if there were enough of them and it caused the package to weigh into the next billing category for UPS or FedEx, then Title may well have a reason to be irritated in addition to needing to remove paper clips that were not sent via edocs. I return them like they came and I think that's what's expected. Also, the paper clips may cause a problem during shipping if they were to cause the package to get caught on something and tear the shipping envelope. Also don't know if they would be scanned for security reasons by FedEx or UPS and finding metal need to be opened for search and repackaged. Don't know if our docs need to pass TSA scanning or not. If they did need to be opened, borrowers privacy could be jeopardized. It's a thought.

The only paper clip I use is if I have to attach a voided

check for their proceeds due. I paper clip it to the doc. Other than that, I think you should remove them. I do clip the entire pkg together with a binder clip when I ship. Never thought of a scanner detecting metal and the pkg then has to be opened. What do others do when shipping back? rubber bands, nothing???

Shipping back

Yes - rubber bands around the documents (two if exceptionally large package);

As for voided checks, I tape the check to the form - paper clips slip and check can become detached too easily.

Re: Shipping back

What about checks for funds from borrowers? I wouldn't want to tape it directly. I usually paperclip it to the HUD. I guess putting it in an envelope and taping the envelope would work.

Thanks again, everyone, for your input. I don't post a great deal, but I read regularly, and I've learned a huge amount from everyone here.

Re: Shipping back

<<<What about checks for funds from borrowers?>>>

Here's how I handle borrowers funds: I bought bright, neon, odd sized yellow envelopes. I take a Sharpie and write FUNDS $$$$$ on the front, place the check inside and use a glue stick to seal the envelope. Then I staple the envelope to a "throw-away" sheet, like the notary instruction sheet. It's placed on top of the stack and is the first thing the Closer sees upon opening the package.

The borrowers are watching......therefore, if the TC were to claim that they didn't receive the check and try to blame me, not only would I refute it, the borrowers would refute it as well - since they witnessed how I packaged the check.

Re: Shipping back

I usually STAPLE it to the copy of the BO's ID's.

Re: Shipping back.....funds back to title

Unless told not to (which I haven't been told) I staple check to first page of HUD and make a copy for my file and borrowers' file (I have portable copier) - everyone has a copy showing amount due on HUD matches check submitted.

IMO paper clips are not secure enough.

Rubber bands. No clips, nothing that will "snag" anything.
