Does anyone contract with a shredding service?
If so, how often do they come and what are their charges? TIA

Have you thought about
attending a "FREE" Shredding Event in your area? Call me cheap, but I attend similiar events twice a year in my town. I always stay to ensure that my documents are properly shredded.

How much do you actually shread??
I just bought a heavy duty one and shred it myself. When the daughter whose college education I am still paying for is home for the weekend, guess what she does?

Re: How much do you actually shread??
Well, I am getting ready to move. I am cleaning out my office and have about 4 boxes already. When times were slow, I had a box once every quarter. Lately, I have had quite a few no signs.

I don't do this myself, but one of my VA clients does. I just have a power shredder in my office and do it myself.
The thing with most of the shred services is that it's done off-site. Once it leaves your office, you really have no control over where those unshredded documents go. That kind of scares me.
My client uses Shred-it, which actually shreds everything on-site in their truck, and they will let you monitor the process if you want. The price depends on how many containers you have and how often they come to pick it up. If I recall properly, she pays about $160 a month for the service and they come twice a month, and she has 2-4 boxes. I may be way off there... I'm going off of what she told me about a year ago. What I do know is that it's actually pretty cheap for her considering the volume of paper she has to shred. She went from having an employee (her nephew) working for her part-time doing nothing but removing staples and paperclips and shredding, to having Shred-it handle it for her.
I don't have anywhere near that volume of paperwork I have to shred, so for now I just do it myself. I bought a pretty heavy duty used commercial shredder from a company that was going out of business. It works for what I need right now.. but I know if my volume goes up, I'd probably talk to Shred-it.

look for local on-site secure shredding
Those that come to you (like Shred-It) are pricey. If you look for on-site services, where you go to them - WAY cheaper. I pay around $25 for two legal-sized paper boxes full, and receive a written certificate of secure shredding (the service I use actually pulps the paper, instead of shredding it).

Re: look for local on-site secure shredding
I agree with Renee. I go to Pro-Shred and they charge $15 per legal-sized box. They dumped all my stuff into a big trash container, then they padlocked it shut. Much easier than shredding tax returns myself.

I shred my own, but you might want to check in your local area to see if there is a biz that employs disabled people to do shredding.

See my post at http://erie.craigslist.org/zip/1975150407.html
I used to donate it to the Humane Society but they don't take it any more. They used it for their rabbits. Noone is ever going to try to piece together pieces of paper that have been used as litter for rabbits.
I received one response from a person at the local VA. He wants a regular supply. I have a regular supply.
I found a cheap micro shredder at WalMart and it really pulverizes the paper. Love it. Cheap too.
