HP 8500 - did I make a mistake?

Just in case someone out there has a magic tip before I pack this up and take it back - I broke ALL the rules when I bought this. Got in a jam, KNEW I needed a new 4-in-1 but put it off, then had to scramble, had to get one THAT day. Just bought this one like any Joe Schmoe off the street (w/out research, and taking what Office Max said about it as gospel).

Big mistake.

It works great - too 'great' - scanned files are HUGE, can't send via e-mail. I'm not about to settle for breaking them up, I paid good money and want what I paid for.

Everything I read for making files smaller, causes them to be completely illegible. DPI less than 300 and you can't read the doc. Change it from color to gray-scale or black/white, becomes illegible (totally). Sure - those 'fixes' definitely make the file WAY smaller, but ...if you can't make out what it's a scan of, what's the point?

Yes, I knew better - that's what makes this all the more frustrating. Any tips?

I am no help Reneek, but I bought 2 weeks ago a Brother MFC 5890CN from Staples for 59.99 dollars and
can scan all my docs in to PDF and a loan package of 100 pages turns in to a 3.3 MB file size. You can return that one if would like, I use this MFC just for scanning since it's a ink jet printer, I never pay for new ink, since I never print anything with it. I have another one Brother MFC 5460 CN that still with the original ink cartridge after 2 years is going to be this Christmas and still working fine, I only use this one for scanning/faxing too. And I paid for this 49.99 at Staples too.

You must have given that very same advice to Harry Reid? This guy’s ‘saved’ six million dollars on a Senator’s salary over the past few years. That’s the kind of guy I want looking after the poor pittance I contribute to the Government’s coffers! How much surplus do (the USA) we now have?
Yeah...Just Politics...I'm just responding to a ...joke?
