Looking for info on CA notary
I received a call last week from a CA notary asking if I would be available to finish a split signing that his company got; unfortunately, things didn't work out as he wouldn't meet my $$$ I would like to know more about who I am dealing with if another call should come from him or his company. Is there any thing that NR members could suggest where I could find out more info on this notary or the company name he gave me? Or should I not hold my breath that he will call again, since not meeting my price the first time? BTW, I went to the CA SOS and downloaded the notary listing they have on their site and didn't find his name on that list. TIA Linda

Uhaaa… let me see…?? There are lots of notaries in CA. Unless you can give us the guy's name (full) and his companies name, and his address we could be guessing for quite a while. PS: No I wouldn't hold my breath.

If you haven't already, look in the "Find a Notary" section. You could also go to "Signing Central" and use the "Who Called Me" to look up the phone number. (You must be signed in to use that feature). If he works for a company he might not be listed here as a notary but use this web site to locate other notaries as he did with you. Good luck.

WHOA.... that's new!!
Thanks for the warning, Ca SOS.... LOL
Up until recently you could not find a CA online.... now they're releasing a list.
Nice of them to tell us.

Re: Looking for info on CA notary - Just curious...
What software program did you use to open that file? I tried downloading it but couldn't open it. (I think it defaulted into trying to open into a PDF file, for which it was probably too big.)
I'm just curious as to what information they have included in this public data base.

Re: Looking for info on CA notary - Just curious...
Hi Janet,
I just downloaded the file and the following information is included:
Total Number of Rows: 186608 The notary public data available in the attached file was generated on: Thursday, October 14, 2010 at: 3:00 AM The active-notary.txt file is a tab-delimited text file. The content of the file includes: Notary public name (last name and name suffix, first name, and middle name); Business name (if the notary public is self-employed, the business name field will be blank); Business mailing address; Filing county code number (county where the oath of office and bond are on file); Commission number; and Commission expiration date.
For more information on compressed (zip) files, see the Technical Help page at: www.sos.ca.gov/help.htm#zip.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I tried to use the "who called me" feature but only got the general location. I'll keep that in mind with future calls where they say they got my contact info from NR.
Since I wasn't sure of the exact spelling of his name or company, I did do a reverse look-up on the phone number and got accurate information that way. His name is Daniel Barrientos, he lives in the Buena Vista area, and his company as listed on Manta is Dtraveling Notary. (No, the company isn't listed with Signing Central.) Just to reiterate: I have no issue with Daniel but just like to know who I'm working with - what type of experience he has, how long he had held his commission, and things like that. After all, he has read my profile and I would like to read his. And if he is on the SOS listing and I overlooked his name, I apologize.
Janet and Kathy: The file from the CA SOS was a delimited text file. After I downloaded it I imported the data into Excel for a more readable format.
