New Notary in North Carolina
My plans are to become a Signing Agent in NC. After doing more research , I'm not sure how profitable this profession can be in NC. I appreciate any advice you may give! Would love to hear from North Carolina Notaries.
Found this on NNA website:
"# Nebraska Limits the fees Notaries may charge (to the statutory maximum fees for notarial acts only). No ancillary fees, such as a courier fee, may be charged.
# Nevada Limits the fees Notaries may charge (to the statutory maximum). These fees include an hourly travel fee based upon the time of day traveled.

When you are working as a signing agent, you are providing services beyond notarial services. Printing the documents = $$ fee. Travel = $$ fee. Going through the entire package with the borrower, making sure you point out key terms located within their documents, making sure that every document is properly signed, dated, initialed, etc = $$ fee. The notarizations = $$ fee. Packaging the signed/notarized docs and taking them to UPS/FedEx = $$ fee.
Typically, a signing agent will quote an all-inclusive fee that includes all of the above services.
If you are hired strictly as a notary, then the only thing that comes into play are travel and the state-allowed charge per notarization. If I am hired strictly as a notary, I do not print anything and I expect the signer to have pulled out all the docs that require notarized signatures. I do not point out any key terms within those documents - I check ID and notarize signatures only, as I am not acting as a signing agent in that instance. Acting only as a notary, I charge a travel fee and $5 per notarization as allowed by my state.
