Oh, the requests...
I swear, some of these signing services don't get it.
It's raining pretty bad right now out in the Mojave Desert... crazy thunderstorms and plenty of flash flood potential. They want me to drive up in to the mountains, which is about 90 min drive each way in dry weather, for an e-signing in an area with a spotty signal. Mind you the area is also going past where there was some recent fires... and most of the route to get *to* the hills is directly through flash flood alley and along one of the most dangerous highways in the country (Pearblossom Highway).
I though I was giving them a deal when I quoted $220 since it's quiet today.
Their response? "Uh...we can only pay $100. I'll keep calling around."

Rots of ruck, I say! Happy Trails. Just not enough money to compensate for the task not to mention life, limb, and well being. Too much risk in foul weather!
Good for you..

Heh...that's where they wanted me to go...
I love driving up there....but not in this weather.
From 4-6am our house was rattled so badly by the thunder and lighting, I honestly though I was waking up to an earthquake at first. Got no sleeps.
Then my poor puppy dog got so scared he puked on our bed....
Then I got cussed out by a guy at the hospital for being $%&#(@# ignorant... because I would not accept his word about his identity (he didn't have ID)....
And my washing machine is leaking all over the place...
It's been a great morning so far.

Sunny with a few whispy clouds at 77 degrees in the San Francisco-Bay Area. Being originally from Arizona, I do miss those electrical desert storms. They're so beautiful to behold.
If you can, Marian, catch a nap. When you wake up, things will seem better. Hopefully, the washing machine just needs a new hose. Forget the ignoramus at the hospital -- he's probably not feeling well and you just happened to be his target for the day. But, most important, cuddle with your puppy to reassure him everything's ok and you still love him.
Tomorrow's another day ....

Re: Heh...that's where they wanted me to go...
Yoli, we had a pretty good thunderstorm down my way today, too. I almost felt like I was back in Tucson - except that it was nice and cool out. I was lucky enough to have today's appointments work out in-between bursts, thankfully, and ended up with two appointments this evening being suddenly canceled. (Apparently found someone cheaper, but one of the callers was at least honest about it.) Couldn't have happened at a better time! So I was home during the worst of it to try to calm down my two cats when a very loud bolt of lightening hit very close to home. It scared the snot out of me - and my younger cat didn't come out from under the bed for two hours...
Marian, I hope your day got much better!!

Re: Heh...that's where they wanted me to go...
Well, wasn't there for a signing. I did, however, get a $100 call, but it was from a 2 star company, so I didn't even negotiate. Even though I was going to be up there anyway, I still would have quoted the price you did. Same distance, different direction same hazards. Cut rate doesn't do any of us any good.

Re: Just got back from Wrightwood.. ..
Glenn, do you do signings in Crestline? I got a call the other day for a signing in Crestline and quoted my fee (considering it's the mountains and 1.5 hours from Upland).....said they'd call back if approved <we know how that story ended>.

Re: Just got back from Wrightwood.. ..
Yes, but they usually don't want to pay the travel fees. There is someone on the front side in San Bernardino that drives up for 75 to 100 bucks. That's not in my price range.

<<<one of the most dangerous highways in the country (Pearblossom Highway).>>>
I didn't know it was considered a dangerous highway, much less one of *the most* dangerous highways. I've driven it several times on a sunny morning or afternoon and really enjoyed the drive. I'm coming from the 10 East, 15 North to 138 North.

Oh, yeah... one of the worst reputations...
Although it has improved a bit in recent years after they did some construction... it's still pretty bad because some drivers just speed down that thing like they're in a NASCAR race and semi drivers drift all over the road. There are lots of accidents and deaths along that road. I always avoid it during commute times.

The section between the Wrightwood turnoff and Littlerock averages 2 fatal accidents per week. There have been two this week just since Sunday however.

I should have said,
Since last month ....
Probably 15 deaths in an average year on the road from Palmdale to I15 in Cajon Pass. 395 from the Outpost to Kramer Junction is another killer.

Well, here I am after a thunderstorm
blew me out of bed and can't sleep, so I figured I would see just where 138 ranks. It doesn't seem like a week passes without reading of another fatal accident on it, so I thought I would find out. Silly me, it's not even in the top 10. One of my local highways is, however.
