at least they pay!!
Nations Direct: with so many companies going out of bs. I actually like them. Just me, but they pay, docs ready on time....etc.

ABSOLUTELY!! They pay THEMSELVES! They give the notary enough to cover printing costs, and maybe a gallon of gas.

My cat just walked on the keyboard and erased my comments....
so I'll try again......
When they hire me they don't pay themselves...they pay me $XXX and then some.
And it's a lot more than printing costs and a gallon of gas.
Having said the above....85% of the time when they call I don't work for them.
But the times I do--the other 15%--I get paid well.
And I don't answer the annoying phone calls...etc that goes with their territory.
BUT THEY DO PAY.

But $40 is NOT enough for me to walk out the door and do a 75+ mile round trip with them arguing with me that I live in a place I have NEVER lived in.
I don't care if they had paid me in cash in advance--$40 is not going to cut the mustard!

To those that get paid by ND....
or any lowballer that pays and/or meets your fee of $XXX......
Of COURSE they pay you! You are probably rural and are one of two Notaries in your area.
Of COURSE they pay you! You don't live in a saturated city where there's a Notary at every third house - where they have a pool of Notaries to mistreat, lowball and stiff.
Of COURSE they pay you! They will need you again at some point, since (as stated above) you are one of only two Notaries in your area.
Of COURSE they pay you! You live in ND (North Dakota) and TN (Tennesse)...

Re: To those that get paid by ND....
I don't disagree with your remarks LKT.
It's one of the advantages of living in a "rural area"...although the metro here is 200k.
Nevertheless, Nations D is not ALWAYS low.
I take plenty of their low-ball calls.
Of COURSE it's not my fault (or theirs) you live in a highly populated area.
OF COURSE they low-ball you...because they know they can
OF COURSE they are well aware that they are not popular with their tactics
OF COURSE they could care less what you think or say or what I think or say.
OF COURSE they are still in business after many years after other more likeable companies
have gone belly up.
If you don't like 'em..you'll do what I do 85% of the time: SAY NO !!!!

Re: To those that get paid by ND....
I won’t take a signing request from Nations Direct at ANY fee. I think they are a scourge on our business. If you work for them (and others of their ilk) you are doing so at the determent of your professional fellows. Spend your tiny remuneration well, because if the ND policy of paying trifles to their working partners while keeping the largest portion of the fee charged for themselves continues, and their competition (that pays fairly) that cannot compete, they and their like will be the only ones calling you in the future.

Les,
you're right...they're a "scourge"
But it's not a perfect world and there will always be "scourges" in this business no
matter what.
My pay from them is not tiny.....when I work for them it's for my $XXX fee plus $50 for
faxbacks and annoyance...on top of it all.
When they hire me they don't pay me peanuts and the bigger chunk goes to me and not
to them.
Don't want to work for them under any terms?
Not a problem
It's a free country.
There are ones I won't work for either...for various reasons.
To each his own.

I will never work for NATION DIRECT again... they will lie to get you to do the closing and then cut your payment check short. This happened to me back in 2002. Never will I work for them again .

You're right, Les, but ....
... there are many notaries who freely admit they work for ND, SOX, etc., claiming they have the inside track on payment. They don't give a crap about what they are doing to our business or to their fellow notaries. They're just into themselves and have no standards. So give it up. These notaries are as disgusting as the hiring entities are - but they think they are the greatest. We'll never get rid of either one... at least we know they are complete liars when they say they get $XXX plus $XX and blah blah blah blah.
I've never been one to criticize fees notaries accept because each person's business model could be unique. Somebody gets to use free paper, ink and computers at their employer's or their spouse's business gas card. Others cut corners big time. Others are just plain stupid or sadly ignorant. But I do draw the line at notaries who knowingly take jobs from these monolithic SSs who do nothing but screw notaries.
We've all taken stupid signings from horrendous SSs for crappy pay and alot of abuse, but we live and learn and then try to educate and support our fellow notaries. This is the best we can do. When Pan/ND says "to each his own," at least most of us can honestly say we don't stand with him, we've never been like that and never will be. When we hang up our seals, we can look back and say we supported the LSA business and our fellow notaries and not the scumbag SSs. To me that's what matters.

The point of my post is to support Les and others who point out that you and notaries like you who willingingly and gladly support those SSs whose only goal is to bring independent NSAs to their knees are highly disrespected among your peers. But all you can continue to babble about is your "check." As far as sending me a copy of this check, you know what you can do with it.

Re: meeting my fee
When they have no choice. It's as simple as that. I'm in a low population/volume area and if they meet my fee, I do the work. It's that or no fee at all some days. What you folks should take from this discussion is if everyone turned them down, they'd have to (& obviously can) pay a decent fee. Do I think it will happen in a notary-saturated area? No. But, face it, ND and even SOX aren't likely to curl up and blow away--but I could--due to lack of work.

Sometimes it's self-preservation. There are lots of people on this board who have other sources of income. Everybody should operate according to their own business plan.

I could not have said it better! It’s a shame that some are so short sighted that they don’t realize that by working for these companies they are degrading not only themselves, but our whole profession. Maybe they should personally meet some of these…people? I think it would give them some insight into who they are facilitating, trusting, and working for.

Les, you are not getting it. Yes I work for ND. I am a self-employed contractor. I work for them as I work for anyone else when they meet my fee and I have the time for the fax backs. They Always pay and promptly and they pay for no signs no BS. Are they a gigantic PIA? Absolutely. Do I take them EOM? Only very close and if I have time for fax backs and if I am in the mood for their crap.
One thing does make me laugh though. I get these emergency calls--How much do you want? If we pay more more than your scheduled appt will you take it? Not ethicalI say, Won't do it .
They have the $. They will pay if they need you.

Then understand that the ONLY reason you are getting paid is because they have no other choice and at some point, when they believe you to be disposable, you'll also be a statistic. They'll have you on their books for ten signings - all of which you *expect* payment for and all of which they'll stiff you for.

Exactly! They certainly aren't a major portion of my business... not even close....would never be missed. As stated by pretty much all of us who do accept an infrequent one from them...when fees are met/they pay. The likelihood of 'having 10 signings from them on the books' in most rural areas is.... a laugh. Won't ever happen.

My translation to the quote above and by the way if you are going to denigrate them at least spell the miserable state's name properly.
