It is a difficult task getting a fair fee at times. Despite our skills and knowledge it is, at times, hard to get a good company to pay us what is reasonable and what we are worth. We work hard to do a professional accurate job and it would be wonderful if there were standard fees paid across the board.

Good job, Richard! Molly....
I agree with you about everything except that 'standard fee' business. This is a big country and the variables are simply too numerous for a one-size-fits-all/standard fee to be reasonable or acceptable to everyone. We're all ICs and, as such, must set our own fee. If what they offer isn't profitable, negotiate or just say no.

Re: Good job, Richard! Molly....
The same thing happens to me all the time. I was standing in my "intermediate office" for a project I'm working in, on the side. In a matter of 10 minutes I got a phone call from the same "DB" company 5 times, trying to get me to take a lowball bid for a job 90 miles away rt. I quoted my fee, and they kept calling back and going up $10 each time. My boss in the office, finally said, "What part of NO, I will do it for $____ don't they understand?" I said," I guess the whole thing!" I drove home, and about 15 minutes later I got a call from a company I work for all the time, and it was for the same closing! They asked if I was available and how much I needed, and said, "fine, we'll send the confirmation!" Life is Good!
