So, I get a text message for a work order-

Now, my first question is, why not call instead of a text message? However, I respond to the text message with a yes and ask, "just out of curiosity" why did you not call? It appears the text message was actually sent yesterday for a signing last night. I got the text message this a.m. about 5. But this must be "The Notary Angel's" way of assisting me in not accepting calls from naughty signing services with a less than desirable reputation. Wink Wink....
However I decide to research the phone number the text message came from, also the name of the ss they provided and "Bam", the number they called from is a number from Texas, however the name they used on the text message is and was a current ss out of San Dimas, well known to many seasoned notaries and or research notary experts....
Beware of the disguised phone number.....of course I could always be wrong.......but me thinks not in this case, I'm not......wink wink.

Texting--grrr. Whether we like it or not it is becoming the communication norm. I've gotten a couple of text msgs. for work. By the time I got them it was too late to respond. I'm with you, I'd rather receive a call so I know the details of the assignment.

It's a cheap way to build up their database and also dictate fees to the greedy. I spoke with one about this and that's what I came away with. IMO

Yeah, and they can do it while driving their car. LOL

VA has made it illegal to text while driving--duhhhhh! When I'm out on the road I will constantly see them texting like mad at the stop light. LOL

Re: I call them "organ donors"

I don't get those that text and drive. it's illegal here in CA, too... drives me batty to see people distracted.

However, I like text messages... and just as if I get a call... if I'm in the car, I pull over at the earliest I can to take care of it.

And if they aren't done when the light changes, they proceed slowly while they finish...ugh!

the fact that you got the text late, is the main reason

texting is not a reliable means of communication as picking up the phone...

I've blocked incoming text messages ...

so I'm never bothered by them, nor worry about them eating up my air time. I use Sprint for my cell phone.

I can't function without text messages...

I love text messages... short, quick and to the point most of the time. Of course, it's something used by my family, friends, existing VA clients, other notaries... not so much with notary clients. Although there have been a few times when I've had "ongoing" communication with some, mostly younger people and I've told them that they were welcome to send me a text message if they wanted to instead of making a phone call.

I even get text messages when I get a private msg here at NotRot. There's also one photo inspection service that will send me notice of a new assignment via text --- but that's because I specifically signed up for that through them.

But to find a notary that way for a job??? That's a bit weird unless it's a company I know really well and they are pretty much assigning it to me, and just using a text to alert me to a new order. In other words... not for a bidding war.... just to say, "Hey we have a new order for you!" -- I do have one TC that doesn't even bother to call me on jobs. They just email them to me and say they need it back by a specific time and date. No haggling on the price, because I have a written agreement with them with a price list... and I just invoice accordingly. If the lady in that office decided to start texting me, it wouldn't bother me at all.

Anyway... I welcome text messages from certain people.

Re: I can't function without text messages...

I welcome ALL text messages from clients, friends and family...sometimes you just don't want to talk when a text will do the job. When I a painting, I like to concentrate on colors not callers.

The communications between me and the borrower establishing a signing time is crucial. So a call to borrower, leaving a message to call me back to confirm can be eliminated with a followup text to them. A lot of working people are busy, in meetings, etc. and cannot answer their personal cell phones when you call them (when I was working, I did not allow people to receive personal calls on their cells) too disruptive. Like it or not text is hear to stay, just wait until you start getting "voice" text messages (it's already out in some areas).

Re: I can't function without text messages...

Exactly... there's a time and a place for texting. For some situations it's perfect, for others, not so much.

It also depends on the person, too.

I love texts, though... and if it's something that can be said short and sweet... and is somebody who also "does" texting... it's a great method of communication.

Re: Texting is not the point, I was attempting to make here-

The point was (and I must have made my point poorly), I felt perhaps the ss was disguising the phone number of where and who they actually were and are.

Texting is great, love it, marvelous invention when needed.....

And yes to the poster who recognized that texting may arrive hours after it's sent......like some emails become trapped in space.

I don't respond to e-mail cattle calls. Now, I'll add texting also.
