If you use a toner that is of a bigger grain size, it could cause what you describe. Not all toner is created equal in that respect.
I also learned a hard lesson years ago when I accidentally used toner for my HP to refill one of my Brother printers. I found out that laser printers run at different temperatures. The HP ran at a higher temperature than my Brothers and the HP toner gummed up the works.
When my HP died, I just stuck with the Brothers because the toner is much easier to refill than the HP that I had at the time.

Yes, and if you're not careful you can cause the fuser to burn out. I had one Brother printer (under warranty, TG) that the fuser burned out on. I think it was, in part, because I had gotten a bad refill cart that dumped a lot of toner on the page.
