.org

I always assumed that a domain with .org was a non profit. It is not although it seems to be assumed by many.
Got an email from the NNA and noticed that little thing.
No I am not a member.

.org = organization... not necessarily non-profit n/m

.org = organization... intended to be non-profit

The domain name org is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) of the Domain Name System (DNS) used in the Internet. The name is derived from "organization".

The '.org' domain was one of the original top-level domains along with .com, .edu, .gov, .mil and .net, established in January 1985. It was originally intended for non-profit organizations or organizations of a non-commercial character that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs.

For more information on gTLD's, see http://www.icann.org/en/tlds/

I checked this out years ago and 'that co' is actually 2. One is a non-profit and the other is definitely for profit. Sorta like a two-headed coiled snake....can't tell where either begins or ends.

Love the analogy, Lee! ;>)

I think that the common perception is that ".org" refers to a non-profit, whether or not that is a requirement. Given that perception, it begs the question of why a for-profit enterprise would use a ".org" instead of a ".com" - which they presumably could have acquired just as easily.

I'm just sayin'...

Well said, Lee. The only people who are fooled are the one's who think "foundation" automatically means non-profit or charity. Foundations are usually set up as tax shelters. One of their slick marketing tricks was to ask for donations to the "foundation"--supposedly set up for education.
Must mean it's paying for college for someone's kid. I'm not kidding. I've heard of organizations that do exactly that sort of thing.

Anybody can register a .org domain -- they don't have to be

non-profit. Many companies actually buy up all of the domains for their companies (.com, .net, .biz, .org, etc.) so nobody else can use them.
