FYI: CA's 2011 Handbook is up
Located at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/notary/forms/notary-handbook-2011.pdf
We're down to 184,000 notaries in California. That's a drop of over 100,000 in less than 3 years.

Joan probably has a better perspective on this than me, but I'd bet that the majority of CA notaries work in an office somewhere and don't do loan documents. I'm guessing the reduced numbers have at least as much to do with the stricter requirements, higher overall cost to get a commission and at least perceived liability. But I'm not complaining either!

Actually, there are 174,383 notaries at this writing currently commissioned in CA...that headcount is diminishing day by day.
