Here is a good one

I got a phone call from a young woman who was applying for a marriage License here. The Clerk told her that her Puerto Rican birth certificate needed to be translated into English and notarized and would I do that. Of course I said No but it got me towondering how she would go about that. I would assume through the Puerto Rican issuing authority?

I had a similar one here in FL...

Spanish birth certificate (Colombia if I remember correctly) translated to English then notarized - I googled "translation services" (they usually have a notary on staff) and referred him there or suggested he contact the Colombian embassy in Washington DC for instruction and referral.

lots of foreigners do not use their embassy for such

services especially for translation, because the costs or fees they charge are just wayyy to much.

As long as the document they need translated, doesn't require a "certified" translator, Robert is right, in that anyone who speaks and writes in the same language can translate the document, as long as they are willing to sign the Translator Affidavit, this will suffice in most cases that I have delt with.

I don't think that Puerto Rican authorities provide the

translation. Really anyone can translate it and sign an affidavit certifying that the translation is accurate. Here is one that was written by the Florida governor's office: http://tinyurl.com/3lcrzgr

The notarized affidavit could then be apostilled.

But, on another note, all Puerto Rican birth certificates issued before July 2010 are invalid.

I would've translated it for her...should send her to me...

if she wants to travel to Chicago.

I do this type of work, translate spanish / foreign docs from spanish to english. However, I'm not sure if the PR government would issue her an "english"version....hmmm...I should look into this...
