Iphone question

I finally got myself a smart-phone the other day. I'm used to my last phone where I could set up my phone book in groups ie family/friends, work, etc. Can that be done with the Iphone contacts? The guide that comes with the phone is horrible. I'm slowly getting things organized and settings set but do not see anything for that feature.
