Paper size

Does the paper size matter? I have a signing and on the instructions is says
WARNING: When printing the package, the CHOOSE PAPER SOURCE BY PDF PAGE SIZE printer selection must be selected in order for the package to print on the proper page size.
But looking at the documents some of the pages are on 8 1/2 x 11 and some are on the 8 /12 x 14 isn't easier just to print all of them on the 8 1/2 x 14?

Legal size is the safe size to print docs if you don't have a two drawer laser printer.

It's more expensive for you to print on all legal so if you DO have a two drawer printer utilize it.

I wish I had tought about that when I bought my printer.
Thank you, Ilene

Paper size

That's ok. I started with a single drawer printer. Here is what I did:

IF YOU HAVE THE TIME before the signing, page through the documents, note the pages that were letter size in one column and list the pages that were legal size in another column. Then it's easy: load in letter size paper and in the Pages box list all the letter pages (including a range of pages separated by a hyphen) separated by commas and print them. Then load legal size paper, enter all those page numbers and print them.

Now look back - how much extra time did it take you to do that vs. just printing it all on legal size paper? What's the extra cost-per-page for the legal size pages over letter size?

Then you decide.

Sometimes they want the documents kept in the same order, so that is another consideration. However, you could do a combination of the two things, i.e. where you have a lot of letter size in a row, print those out on letter, etc. You could work out some kind of system to accomplish a little bit of both, printing some docs, at least, on letter and the rest on legal, but still keeping them in order.

Sometimes an extra tray can be added on. You can find that out by reading the owner's manual or looking at the specs. Sometimes, an additional tray can be purchased on ebay. That's what I did. You won't believe how much $$ you can save!

If you don't have a two-drawer printer, you may still be able to split the paper size if your printer has a multi-purpose (MP) tray. These are usually meant for one-off printing of things like envelopes, but they can sometimes be configured to serve as a second tray.

For instance, I have a Brother HL-5150D with a MP tray that can hold 50 sheets. I can set that tray for letter-size, set the main tray for legal size, and Adobe pulls the paper from the correct tray every time. Not the ideal situation, but it works...

It may not be "ideal," but it's plenty good enuff and saves the expense of a second tray/drawer. My printer in an HP and I called tech support to help me set the printer so it would select the appropriate page size. Works great. (I learned this reading NR!) So maybe you could get your printer set up that way too, Darlene. Better than unnecessarily using expensive legal size paper ....

I'm not sure I understand this printing?

Do you print all the letter size documents and then re-load that tray with legal size paper and the printer pulls & prints only the legal size docs?

"Do you print all the letter size documents and then re-load that tray with legal size paper and the printer pulls & prints only the legal size docs?"

No, you assign one paper size to the MP tray and the other size to the standard tray. The printer will pull from whichever tray it has to - it "thinks" you have two trays.

Brilliant, MikeC/NY. Nominee for Really Good Info Post:

So, I'm down-sizing to my HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One; and selling the ol' dual-tray Clydesdale HP 2430dtn, HP scanjet 8250 w/feeder, and the portly ole Bro Intellifax 2800.

Your solution just eased the transition to a different circumstance; a smallish-but-well-appointed- self-contained studio w/smartcar garage, and suitably motorized. The All-In-One's real estate's a do-able install in the Office 'n Eats area.

So many thanks for shining a Techy-spotlight on a broad question by posting a perfect solution, MikeC/NY.

If your printer has a manual feed tray, you can use that to print legal. I did that until I made enough money to get a dual tray printer.

The main issue is that they don't want docs all shrunk to

letter-size or cut-off at the top, etc. Printing docs correctly is a huge part of this job. Rule of thumb is to print mixed sizes if you have a dual tray printer, or print on all legal size if you don't. As someone has already pointed out, you might check to see if a 2nd tray if available for your printer. 2nd trays aren't always cheap, but you might check NewEgg, Amazon, & Ebay. Good luck.

Re: The main issue is that they don't want docs all shrunk to

I have a dual size tray and always print the original set as is comes on the PDF then for the borrowers copies I print on letter size because it is more expensive to purchase legal size paper vs. letter.

Re: The main issue is that they don't want docs all shrunk to

what do you do if you have to swap a legal size page out and you gave the borrowers their copies on letter size?
