This question is reserved for the younger members of NotRot; please, if you're over 30, don't answer.

I thought it was supposed to be like a Rotary Club for notaries.
Rotary Club  –noun a local club of business and professional men that is a member of a world-wide organization of similar clubs (Rotary International) devoted to serving the community and promoting world peace. Dictionary.com Unabridged

Since you're not getting answers from the young'uns (and like Bob, I can't even remember 30), still - it's clear that "rotary" refers to the old dial phones - and in "call a notary."

Guess I was wrong. I was thinking of the old rotary index cards. (You know the ones that look like business cards with tabs that hold them on a wheel that turns).

I agree with Flnotary2. It's just a guess on my part but it is where I always thought the name came from.

Not under 30 but will take a stab at this.....
The Notary Public part we all know. "Rotary" - deciding whether an action is ethical and in line with the rules/regulations/laws. Or, having to do with meetings rotating between offices.

Re: Because it rhymes.
Apparently all the young vigorous under 30 notaries are all out doing signings (except Robert, he doesn’t do signings) we see only guesses from the aged sitting around, bored, waiting for the phone to ring. I’m not under thirty, but because I’ve heard the rumor I’ll contribute, and perhaps stop all this speculation? (Although disclosure of this well kept secret, may cost me my membership?) Rumor has it that about 14 years ago Harry, for a vast sum, bought the idea for a notary web site where notaries could get together, advertise, share experiences and discuss relevant topics. (sort of like a ‘roundtable’) from a guy called ‘Nathan Rotary’ that unexpectedly had to leave Des Moines for health reasons….or so the rumor goes?? Plus it rhymes.

Heck, I just assumed it refered to an old rotary style rolodex like I used back when I was under 30....

Reply by HisHughness on 4/4/11 10:25pm Msg #378670
Truth is, I don't know. Like Robert, I have always assumed it stemmed from the Rolodex type address files, which was why I restricted the respondents to those under 30. Figured most of them had no idea what a Rolodex is. After posting the question, I went on line, and damned if rotary indexes aren't still available.
I have queried Harry for the answer, and will post it when he decides whether to unravel the mystery.

Trivia tidbit: Back in '03 or '04 when I first located NR, I googled for other notary sites. I came across a few that I attempted to visit. When I clicked on the search engine link I was re-directed to NR. At some point, several sites were consolidated into this site.
My answer to your children's query? Now that you have upped the age and lowered the bar...I always assumed that NotaryRotary was a parallel to the international business group, Rotary.
It's a Rotary requirement to attend a meeting each week. That's why I have always been faithful to be here weekly, if not daily, over the past six or seven years.
If NR's name relates to a office supply, a Rolodex, it could be a paradigm shift for me.
I really wish we had not gone there.
