Taxes

I received a letter today from the IRS and they denied the "Exempt Notary" reduction on line 3 of the Self Employment Tax form "Schedule SE". The instructions for filling out the form still has the Exempt Notary provisions on page 4 for 2010. I hope this is just an error that the IRS has made. Has anyone else had this problem this tax year? My previous 3 years went through without issues.

No, that message doesn't apply. I filed the old fashion way and even wrote Notary Exempt and the amount on line 3 as the instructions specify. Glad to hear no one else has had this problem. Probably just an IRS error.

Michael, go to the following website and pdf and look at page 4 of the instructions. Hopefully this can answer your question.

Thanks, John. I was sweating for a minute there, thinking

they might have done away with the exemption. That would cost me a bundle.

Re: Thanks, John. I was sweating for a minute there, thinking

As mentioned in a previous posting, my return was rejected electronically on the first try. On the 3rd try, it went through.
I file single, unmarried but don't think that was the problem.
As John (I believe) pointed out, IRS was having a few problems.

Re: Thanks, John. I was sweating for a minute there, thinking

I just got a letter from the irs saying I owe over $500 because of the self employment tax. I used turbo tax and never had a problem before....I called the irs and she said do an amended form 1040x..but I don't think this will fix it...I am wondering if it is something in turbo tax that has stated the notary income wrong??
