$81.27 to print 3 sets docs at FedEx store

Had to print on the fly this weekend and found that the cost to print at FedEx has risen along with our other costs.

My print fee is $25 so I lost money on this. I've read many posts recently about lowball fees offered by SSs. The only way one could make a profit with those fees is if you're using the paper and printer at your day job. For the rest of us, please take note.

I know exactly what you mean. I have had to use FedEx to print about 3 times this year. Thank God I don't have to use them all the time!! It cost me about $31 to print two sets. I made a profit overall but not as much as I would have made if I could have printed at home.

I never paid that much! I've only done it a few times and I had the docs sent to the fedex kinkos email. They print out then I take that stack and run it through the public machine. Under $10.

You send highly confidential information to Kinkos Email????

Not for nothing, but the borrower's information is entrusted to us. How is it protected if it's being sent to the FedEx Kinko's email?

Sounds to me like they were sent to FedEx/kinkos instead of

Julie/MI.

A while back, there was a company that wanted to send all docs to FedEx/Kinkos as they had an agreement for that. I think the deal fell apart because not enough notaries would climb aboard due to difficulties in logistics getting to and from the printing source(s).

I don't think privacy was the overriding concern then....but I don't remember all the details. It was talked about here at length.

If you charge less than Kinko’s for legal/letter copies you are losing money. You can’t buy materials, and equipment for their costs. I submit Title Companies, (that pass on their costs to the borrower) know this, and the costs of shipping, (that they also pass on) How many ‘overnight’ docs have you seen lately? Again ‘stuff’ rolls downhill!

You know, I was just at Office Depot. I noticed that they have copy services. I inquired whether they have printing services as well. They do. Self-service printing is .09 a page for black and white, .10 a page if you go through one of the staff.

For 200 pages, just going off a random number, that's $18.

Perhaps you should out seek your local Office Depot? Smile

Did you ask if that was on legal size?

Places have quoted me two fees - letter size and legal size - legal, for obvious reasons, is more expensive.

It costs more to have them print the docs and have them already packaged for you. They have to pay for the labor and time. I have only used the service when I had 15 between leaving work and getting to the signing. It was either pay FedEx or not take the signing because there was not enough time to go home and print. I refuse to print at my day job. Nothing is worth losing your primary job over.

Be careful having a fed ex employee print your docs. I too had to have some docs printed on the fly, stopped into a fed ex office to get them printed. The girl asked me if I wanted them to print for me (behind the counter) or do it myself, I stated whatever was faster as I was in a hurry. She took the docs and came back with my copy. When I looked at the new set, it was obviously printed on thicker paper. Waaaay too thick. She had printed the docs on 32lb paper! I had her redo them and ended up with 24lb paper.

I was a little bewildered on her decision to print on 32lb paper when the docs I handed her were obviously 20lb paper, she didnt ask, she just printed.

VIOLATION OF PRIVACY POLICY US PATRIOT ACT

Documents are entrusted to you. You are revealing personal information to individuals who are not authorized to handle or see personal information on borrower. This is one reason why identity theft is possible. Find another metnod of printing your docs on the go. There is no reason why you can't invest in a laptop, portable printer and air card. This is a great liability.

***There is no reason why you can't invest in a laptop, portable printer and air card.***

Well, yes there most definitely is a reason: The expense involved. including the monthly expense of an air card.

This has nothing to do with protecting the security of documents -- the necessity of that is a given. To take that many steps further, though, and to say there is <NO> reason not to make that investment is ludicrous. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of signing agents, myself included, elect not to make that investment.

Agree with Hugh...there's a multitude of reasons..

the expense, the market demand for that capability, one's own business climate...many many reasons..

Too broad a brush used here..

You are making that investment of paying out more than you are getting ($81.00 to print out an assignment -- crazy). Called saving up and investing in your business.

1. Cricket Air Card -- FREE Monthly fee $40.00
2. Mini Laptop -- Walmart - $259.00
3. Portable Printer -- HP 1020 -- $149.99 purchase online

Come on make some money, stop paying out.

As I said - that's an individual decision

My business is not such that I need this type of technology - I've never had so many calls that I can't get back to print. And an aircard for me would be far more than $40/month - maybe Cricket (whatever that is) works for you, but I wouldn't have a chance of a signal around me.

Portable printer..fine -but how about the pure sine inverter required, plus installation?? I'm certainly not lugging a printer into someone's house so we can print...it would have to be in-vehicle....therefore, proper power and it's installation is required. Not so cheap any more.

Sorry, what works for one may not work for another...need to keep that in mind.

However, that said, I would not entrust docs to ANYONE to print for me..

It's Called Investing In Your Business

Good to know you take other people's personal data seriously. However, getting more technical would bring your business up to be a more marketable one, the fee(s) increase and your calls would come from Title Companies instead of signing services.

We here in Maryland are getting favorable deals, because of enhancing our services. Either, printing in the car or in the clients home is good and eSigns are given as well. You need a laptop to do eSigns as well as the printer to close at the borrower site, no matter where you meet. Need to be more flexable as well as marketable. It woudn't hurt to purchase your equipment in bits and pieces when you do have that extra cash.

Lady, who in the hell are you to tell me what investments I should make in <MY> business? My guess is that I was in business when you were still in grade school, that I've been doing this at least as long as you, and finally that I have both the intelligence and the expertise to make such decisions without your instructions.

You run your business. I'll run mine.

You might want to consider backing it down quite a bit, like maybe just telling people what you have elected to do, rather than telling them what they <should> do.

The only time I have used a portable inkjet printer attached to my computer is when I do income tax return at a location where the client does not have a computer or printer. I would not do this for notary work as I would not be paid enough for the investment in equipment.

If you are speaking to me, I didnt have them print anything that wouldnt be public record in the end. No sensitive info on the docs I needed.

And agree with others on the cost factor........I need to do something like this maybe twice a year. Hardly worth it to invest in a mobile office.

Julie in MI-VIOLATION OF PRIVACY POLICY US PATRIOT ACT

That was NOT for you Lisa, that should have been for Julie-MI. She said she had the doc's emailed to FedEx Kinko's email!

Absolute BIG NO NO NO in this business. Wonder how many people have access to that email address? How does one know it's not still in that system somehow, some way.

It's bad enough we have them emailed to US. But having them sent to a public place with sooooo many people that have availability....

Ugggh. Lawsuit in the making. Just pray those peoples ID doesn't get stolen. It probably could and very well will get traced back to you some how. And it's really (for me) not even about getting sued. I try to treat other peoples identities as I would want mine treated and protected. It's very important to me. (not to say it's not important to anyone else.)

Huh uh, never never uh uh uh for me. JMHO

It might not even had been something considered as a security breach. So consider it in the future.

I so agree with you NJDiva, it happened to me and my husband years ago. I AM AN ID THEFT VICTIM and it turned out that my docs were sent to a copy service to the notary, and the theives purchased a house and a Ford Bronco using our information. It was employees from the copy service and they fleed back to their country.
