Borrower strange request
I arrived on time. Mr was in shorts no shirt or shoes. He said wife was upstairs getting kids to bed. He warmed up a baby bottle and, went up there. He then came down and asked if wife could come down just for signing her part. I told him that she had to sign all the docs like him. He asked if she could sign a doc go back upstairs and, then come down for next one or else they would have to cancel. I looked at him and, thought what? I then said, this would only take half an hour.He reluctantly agreed we got it done. One time I had one where wife had to sign the marital docs. She kept leaving the room to read story to child. I could hear her doing character voices while she was reading. It was cute but, finally I said, you need to sit down this won't take too long. I usually won't sit down till they are all at the table.

Yeah…stuff happens… if you let it. One has to walk in the door (humbly) with authority, be a professional, and take charge (politely) of the closing…from where the signers sit to what pens they use. JMO

So true, Les! If they look like they're going to sit in the wrong chairs, I tell them they now have "assigned seating." And I hate it when I see they have their own pens already lined up on the table. Actually, it's kind of nice to see borrowers actually expecting and preparing for our arrival. So many act like they had no idea we were coming, despite confirmation calls and alerts that we need to see ID and have copies made, etc. Usually, the dogs need to be put up/out (a 5 minute barking ordeal while we stand on the front porch), the signing table is covered with grease and crumbs, they have no idea where they put their ID, etc.
Anwyay, Ali/Il, it looks like you handled the distracted borrowers nicely. Usually, when I get in that situation, I ask them if they would like to reschedule to a more convenient time. This always gets their attention. But your way is nicer .. telling them this'll take just a a little bit longer if they can just focus and sign ... and I like your idea of not sitting down until all signers are at the table. Great body language!

Glad to know that many of you have to wipe table crumbs away too! I bring pens, suggest where I would like to sit to make the signing more efficient, and before they sit down, ask for their ID....so they don't have to get up from the table again!
All of these folks know we're coming, and if I were expecting guests to my house, I would ensure we have a adequate place to sign the documents. Last night, the hamster's cage had to be cleared off the table! What are these people thinking? Funny, what we encounter!

I used to do a lot of reverse mortgage closings. There is something in the DNA of little old ladies over 70 that impels them to use their dining tables as storage for their collectibles, or workspace for hobbies such as quilting. As a result, part of my confirmation call nowadays is: “We’re going to be shuffling up to 150 pages of documents between us, so we’re going to need a working space, such as a dining table that’s been cleared off.” Takes care of the clutter/unclean problem, and has averted a few coffee table signings.

There you go, again, Hughness...
dissin' quilters. I warned you about this before to stop bad-mouthing us or I'd poke your eye out with a quilting needle! Actually, these sweet ladies would seem to be in your age group, more or less, probably widowed by now, and I'd think a homey, cozy quilt laying around would sort of appeal to you ......? Get your mind off all those troublesome ex-es....

I did a signing once where the husband just got out of the hospital and was on oxigin ( sorry about the spelling) He sat in a chair watching tv and couldn't get out. It was about 6 feet away from me. So each time I needed something signed I had to take it to him. Needless to say the signing took longer than expected.

I find a clipboard handy for such times.

I would have moved over to him with a chair, made Mrs. do all the up/down or bring her chair over too. Must have had a TV tray/table if he was camped there. I can accommodate, but it has to be on my terms.
Who is in control? not them. We are. If he has assigned seating because of illness, etc., then I will assign the remainder. As Les said, clipboard is handy too. Got to be ready for contingencies.

As I learned during my real estate sales days...we must have a box handy in our cars with the necessities.
