FYI, beware of doing any signings in Borders
They are liquidating, but open for business. They would not let us use table and chairs. They were so rude. I explained what we were doing, and was told to leave. I even told them that I would buy something when we were finished. Made no diff.

They probably aren't in a very good mood with closing...
...their doors.

Not an excuse, but if I worked for Borders and was about
to join the ranks of the unemployed, I might be cranky too. I have found that your best bet is usually a library, Burger King or MickeyDs I ty to avoid Starbucks as the tables are too small and place is usually too crowded.

Thumbs up, McD's in off hours and Jack in the Box.
It's a Grind isn't bad.

MickeyDs are very "signing" friendly IMO. Ditto for what Bob says about Starbucks.

Re: Not an excuse, but if I worked for Borders and was about
I meet people at Starbucks all the time for private notary jobs but I am thinking of finding a new location. I am getting really tired of telling people that I will be waiting INSIDE the front doors and holding a black briefcase, yet they are looking for me somewhere OUTSIDE on the patio and we end up waiting 10 minutes for each other even though we are both already there! It doesn't happen too often, but often enough that I am figuring out a new place to meet. I agree that Starbucks can often be crowded and yes the tables are too small.

I have done signings under these circumstances and have ambivalent feelings about it. I want to give good service to the customer, but also understand that these are not public places. They put out tables and chairs for the convenience of their customers and I feel like I am mooching off them if I don't at least buy a cup of coffee or a Coke. They have every right in the world to ask me to leave if I am using their facilities in a way that is at odds with their business. I don't believe that most chain type operations really care that much and this is probably the exception rather than the rule, but they do have the right to stop you.

Most liquidations are handled by 3rd party
At least the ones I've been to. Chances are, the employees that are there now are not Borders employees but actually from the liquidation company. This is what they do, their job is to go in and clean a store out. Yes, literally and figuratively speaking. When they are done, they move on to the next place which could be a furniture store, etc. Still, I'm sorry it happened.

ALWAYS I make a small purchase in a public location, even if it's just a cup of coffee or tea...

It sounds like the employees you encountered may have been in a bad mood. Some people are just naturally rude, like that. I wouldn't take it personally, though, and I'm sure you didn't, either. Still, rude people usually lead miserable lives. In fact, most end up living alone as lonely, bitter, mean hermits with few, if any friends and no prospects for a job because they are just too mean. They bring it on themselves. Hopefully, you can take comfort in knowing that the rude idiots who mistreated you are probably sitting on their bathroom floor, crying into an empty bottle of cheap whiskey.

I agree - Taylor Swift said it best "why do you have to be so mean?" ♪♫
