Generator
Consider getting a generator. Depending upon the size you can keep your fridge, computer, TV, printer, some lights, cordless phones, phone charger, and other services going when the power fails.

I think I've posted this before..one of the things I
told my husband when we moved here is a generator is mandatory - we had one installed 4 years ago - best thing we've ever done - power out, wait 30 sec, generator powers up and we're good to go - the only thing it doesn't run is my stove (no biggie, we have a grill) electric garage doors and our central air (bedroom window units will work)...well, septic, and the rest of the house are all hooked in.

My friend said: “No Honda’s for me! I have a small dynamo connected to a converted tread mill (bow flex) connected to my beer frige, and a small riding crop. If the power goes out I just put the ol’lady on the treadmill, use the crop sparingly, and I have my cold beer, and she’s loses weight. A real win-win situation.” I said good thing we live in CO, where we still burn coal and don’t have to worry about tropical rain storms. Where those in power can shut down/affect millions of people’s lives with just a TV broadcast. Re: “I SAID it’s a DESASTER, and by gum I’ll do my best to make it one”….Ho - hum!

Yes, a generator is essential here with the hurricanes. We ran it a couple of weeks ago when there was a power outage for a few hours. I think ours is a 5000 watts. I know it keeps the fridge, freezer, TV, lights, computer, cordless phones and the stove and microwave going which is all we need.

A few years ago we lost power and hubby was afraid the sump pump would overflow. He insisted we get a generator. So he runs off to the store. After being home only a couple of mins the lights came on "I said that was a fast hook up" He laughed and said no the power just came back on!
We use it occassionaly and it has come in so handy! No sump pump or freezer melt down and I can make my coffee too!
