Would not having a toll free voice mail number really impact your business? I dropped any toll free numbers several years ago due to the cost. There was no change in business.
I personally don't even worry about toll charges when I call because my cell company has long distance included. I believe that all cell companies do that. Correct me if I am wrong. I suspect that just everyone that you would be doing business with probably thinks the same way I do and when I make a call that would be toll on the land line just pick up the cell. Very few people don't have cells these days.

This is NOT for my notary business. I am starting an internet business. I would rather have the calls go to voicemail. I just found one that is bare bonews for $4.95 a month with no minutes. Minutes are 4.5 cents. That's not bad until I figure out what my usage will be.

Well, ok. That's a horse of a different color.
Don't know what you are planning, but if you can fix it so most everything a customer can do can be done on your website with a form, rather than a phone number, then you would minimize your toll free costs. Then make the toll free number the very last thing on your "Contact us" list.

That's a great idea Glenn. Somebody told me that It might give my website more credibility. I do know that Amazon doesn't have a number to call. What do you think?

Amazon phone #
On several occasions I have looked up a customer service # for amazon. An automated call asks you to leave your phone # and they call you back.

Re: Well, ok. That's a horse of a different color.
As Harry said, Amazon does have a number, but it's a little hard to find.
Personally, I prefer to deal with issues using the website rather than a phone. I buy much from Amazon and Ebay and have always been able to resolve any issues using the computer. The key is to promise to get back within 24 hours or maybe 2 business days and then make sure you follow through. You want to give yourself some leeway, so don't promise any less than 24 hours. And if the business starts to take off, make sure you have enough help. Nothing worse for a customer than waiting and a lot of that can happen when a business takes off faster than expectations.
Buy as far as the phone, I think most customers would just as soon send a message via computer, then go about their business and check later rather than leave a phone message or talk on the phone. I do think you have to have a phone number as an option, though.
Good Luck!!!!!!!
