Reaching out to Oklahoma notaries on this forum

I'm working with a State Representative to change the Oklahoma laws as they relate to notaries. In light of the recently enacted "Voter ID" law, I believe the legislature should review the statutes.

I ask that if you have any suggestions or have seen situations where the laws are too vague or hard to understand, please contact me. My information is available on my profile.

And if those of you in other states have suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing from you also.

Thanks in advance.

What are some of the issues you see with the current regs?

I'm not familiar with OK regs so I don't know what suggestions I might have that would be helpful at this time.

Are you wanting to make them more lenient or stricter?

The wording under paragraph 4 appears to leave the door wide open for voter fraud. "Provided, if the person presents a voter identification card issued by the appropriate county election board, such card may serve as proof of identity without meeting the requirements of paragraphs 2 and 3 of this subsection.

B. 1. If a person declines to or is unable to produce proof of identity, the person may sign a statement under oath, in a form approved by the Secretary of the State Election Board, swearing or affirming that the person is the person identified on the precinct registry, and shall be allowed to cast a provisional ballot as provided in Section 7-116.1 of this title."

This "voter ID" statute is only a sample of the contradictory laws that impact the function of a notary in Oklahoma. My goal is to have something in place, either at the SOS or from the legislature, that helps notaries to better do their job to help protect the public.
