Thank goodness for the phone call
I was at a signing last night with some extra specially nice people... that of course love to talk. Just before the signing was complete the wife goes into the kitchen and brings out a huge bowl of fruit. This was a 5pm signing, they spoke broken English so it took awhile and was not over until about 6:30 pm the wife kept having to jump up for the kids or to make food. I had a hard time understanding the questions they were asking although they seemed to understand me quite well. The entire time talking to each other in another language... Not exactly sure which language, I did not recognize the language...So, trying to carry a conversation was extremely difficult but they loved to talk and I would have to ask them to repeat quite often. I tried to leave several times and tell them I needed to get the documents back...ect.. I used every excuse in the book... kids, docs, ect... and they just kept on talking and talking... I was out at my car for some 30 minutes and they were still asking questions ect.. (not about the loan). I was trying to be polite then finally the call came... the call that on any other day, I mumble to myself "oh geeze if there was a problem with the closing I would call you. It was the SS and they were calling to make sure the loan closed. This was my out I said I really have to go that was my boss on the phone and they really need me to get this documents back to the office. If I don't go right now I am going to get in a lot of trouble because it is getting late..they understood that and bid me a farewell and advised me that I could stop by anytime I am in the area.
Over the last year and half I have to say I do like it when the SS does call you after the signing should be complete. For security reasons and to possibly get you out of a sticky situation such as excessive talkers or the people who want to make sure your saved before you walk out the door.

Before cell phones were the norm, I had a friend that is when one of those techy type. He wrote a program that would dial his pager and page him when he wanted. So, anytime he had to go to a meeting at work, which he hated, he would have the pager go off about 15 minutes in. ha ha ha I thought it was very genious of him.

For appts 5pm or later, I always announce "I will not take up too much of your time so that you can get back to your family/evening and that the docs can be dropped as quickly as possible". I have never been held over

It's nice to be nice, but if you had had a back to back...
would you have stayed and chatted? Many times if I see that there is going to be issues while performing a signing (often it's evident in the beginning, I've had the same situations with the kids, etc., especially when it includes a language barrier), I will make it clear that I'm limited on time because I have another closing right after theirs (or maybe even two.)
I'm sure to tell them I will not rush them but it's important that I have their undivided attention until we have completed the closing.
Sometimes it's nice to sit and talk. I'm definitely a people person and love this business, but there are times when enough is enough...lol
I've surely been there too and "feel your pain." lol
