" doesn't need a diaper?"

Signing today. 2 year old boy decides to empty his bladder on the living room floor ( white carpet). Mother takes him to another room to clean him up- he was fully clothed. No one moves a muscles to clean up his mess? Father sits and talks to me while the mother cleans the boy? Mother returns and we continue to sign. I mention that maybe he needs diapers? And their answer is- you guessed it - " No.". YIKES!!!!!!

The carpet was the sponge. Perhaps one day they will wring it out.

Holy bejeebers!

Most current potty training guides will tell you no diapers.

I almost have my little one trained and sometimes it's hard not to fall back. At some point you just have to stop putting diapers on and let them worry about being wet. Most little boys are not ready to train at 2 but every child is different.

I however would have cleaned the rug, that's nasty.

Darn. Just when Depends were beginning to look like a viable option.

Weird situation... but why ask if the kid needs diapers? That seems a little over the line. They may have a very good reason for what they're doing.

I know that one of my friends LET her kid destroy her carpets while he was potty training... because she hated the carpets and wanted hardwood floors. She and her husband had an agreement that as soon as the baby was potty trained, the carpet would come up. Seemed to me that kid was one of the fastest trained to a toilet I've ever seen.

Good observation, Marian. Family synergy at it's best.

As another 20-something mother in our San Francisco flat 40 some years ago - diggin' Sesame Street and potty-training era - overhearing Barb's son Dennis, upon his first royal flush -: "Bye bye poo-poo..." and studying in rapt attention to every swirl down that watery hole, and climbing up his kid-steps to the sink - does a pretty darned good job of washing up. A banner day!

Translation: Diapers suck.

This gives me a better perspective about the time that a signer had her 2-year old triplet boys bring their little potties into the dining room where we were signing and was giving them a potty training lesson as we passed the papers around... Guess that's was much better than them just going on the carpet! Smile

Re: Good observation, Marian. Family synergy at it's best.

When I was younger, I remember a few commentaries on my life and the way I did things with my children.

Most of the time I just smiled when someone asserted an unsolicited opinion about how I ought to do things. Sometimes I said, "Hey, thanks for paying my electric bill!" (What are you talking about?) "Oh, I figured you were paying my bills since you were giving me advice."

Toilet Training Made Easy....

When we moved to CA we wanted to register our daughter in pre-school. She so loved the little potties that she went to the bathroom. From that day on she was trained day and night! (2 1/2 years old).

I seem to recall some advise that went like this:

You can begin potty training a boy at 2 and he will be trained at 2 1/2 or you can start training him at 2 1/2 and he will be trained at 2 1/2.

When my oldest girl was 2 (she is 36 now) I read a book that told me how to potty train a child in one day. I won't go into the details but I followed the instructions to the letter. The only problem I had was my daughter had not read the book. Smile

Then I thought, we are driving cross-country to CA. I must be crazy! LOL!

I have five grandchildren, the last one is a boy.

Wouldn't you know it, the girls all took it in stride. My only grandson complaints,.....about the butt-mud. ROFLMAO

Brings back a memory - somewhere in potty-training days - my youngest son - "Mom, come see!" I went, I saw, and I wondered - will that flush?
