I wish you’d have had the one good one I had to turn down. I actually had three but two don’t count: Guy (very smart) says can you do a closing? I say what time, he responds, I say yes, he says we pay $85. I say forget it. He says I’ll see if I can get it approved? I say don’t bother I don’t need the money that bad, good luck! The next was similar, but I interrupted her pitch… and said depending on time I can do it for $125. She said we don’t usually pay that much but I’ll see. I said “don’t bother.” This is a company that I’ve worker for before…new scheduler…. They still charge the borrower $350 closing fee. I’m sorry I think that my confirming/printing/signing/returning legalizing/the docs worth at least 35% of the fee they charge the borrower….but not this time! This time they got someone cheaper, and who knows it could work out without a problem? Or maybe....NOT? Guess how much I care? Guess what I'll say next time they call me?

I was right there with you, Les, for most of your post. In fact, it was eerily close to at least one conversation I had with someone yesterday (and again the day before). I'm just not sure why you would tell them "don't bother" - unless it was a company you knew you didn't want to work for at all, of course. (Did I miss that?) I don't expect to hear back from them after these types of conversations, but if you leave the door open, once in a while, I've found that they DO call back - especially at end of month.
But the nice thing about being your own boss is that you're free to give them a "don't bother" any time you want!

Sorry but that was an unedited (why do I do that?) post after a long day and a (2) glass of wine, but it sort of conveys what I meant to say. I know I’m in business, I know I should be polite to everyone that calls me. BUT… it’s EOM I’ve got two phones ringing…I’m waiting for a call from an EO on a problem with a file that MUST be solved on an appointment that I should have left three minutes ago on, and I get a call from some smarmy know-it-all jerk with some low-ball company, that calls me with an insulting offer, then has the nerve to say they ‘could’ maybe pay more. I’m sorry, but SCREW THEM!!! These guys are below telemarketers on my list. I am no longer polite to these sleazy companies or the schedulers they hire. Let them go get a legitimate job with a legitimate company! These people are WASTING my time. I don’t EVER want to speak to them again, or try and collect what they owe me. PLEASE take me off your sucker list! I am a seasoned knowledgeable professional and I DO NOT work for clowns. And that is NOT an opinion!

That didn't come out right...apologies..
Scheduler didn't tell me their notary overbook - I'm saying a call at that time, to me, means their pre-scheduled blah blah
Aahh..you get it...I'm going to bed...nitey nite!!..

Re: glad to hear that Claudine, truly.
July was my best month ever, so this was very wierd. But I got to have dinner with my son who was visiting so it turned out OK.

It may have been a blessing. I had one yesterday, the woman had a fit because I would not notarize her husband with his driver license, it didnot match the documents. Met at a restruarant, every person that came up to the table she had to tell, that I would not accept his drivers license. Had to use crebible witnesses. plus he had to go get other docs he had at home in order to comply with the patriot act form. 2 hours of this, non stop. One of the witnesses and the husband told her to get over it. Never shut her up. He was very nice, you could tell he didn't know what to do with her. Now arn't you glad you didn't get this call.

I have encountered similarly rude clients. My response is consistent: "I'm sorry. But, the rules I'm following are notarial law in my state. If I bend even one such law, I could lose my notary commission for life. And, if you continue to be verbally abusive or harassing toward me, I will leave, now. Then, I will report your behavior to your LO."
My agreement with the BO's LO requires them to pay me just for showing up. If the transaction in question cannot be completed because of indecent or abusive behavior from BO/client, I still get paid. I don't tolerate abusive behavior from anybody, I don't care who they are. Never have. Never will.

5 Star Post, Les CO!!
Completely agree with Les. I got one call yesterday - offering $60. Over the last few week's calls, the highest fee anyone would pay was $75. Tomorrow I notarize for the client of an attorney I networked. She has an in-house Notary who only notarizes at the office and has no interest of mobile work. If the client is unable or unwilling to come to the office, they call me. In this instance, the couple lives a distance away, didn't feel like coming to the attorney's office, and wanted to meet on Sunday at their home. Several documents need two signatures notarized, plus the <sweet> travel fee. Woohoo!!
