I did one job and when I put my check in bank they had stopped payment on it. No return phone calls from their accounting dept. Looks like I'm could be out my fee plus the $12 the bank charged me.

Call them and tell that due to their past treatment of not paying the notaries, you are going to decline this assignment. If you take it, it's your loss. Good luck.

You can always turn the job back - just do it ASAP. Did you do a search on this company here on NotRot?

Stop right there

Don't be timid and feel all professionally obligated to continue with a job when you have already been told it is highly unlikely you will get paid. Not only that, they'll stick you with a NSF fee! Insult on injury.
Just call them ASAP, say no dice cos of their lousy payment history and forgettaboutit. I bet they've heard that before and will just hang up. Let them worry about finding another notary they can con. It would be stupid of you to continue at this point.... no matter how close you are to the signing time.

I've had to do this a couple of times - when I took a job before I checked the bums out on SC or Notary Talk. Both times they just grunted and hung up. They'd been down that road before. Actually, one time was extra fun. Apparently, the cheatin' SS never could find a notary, and I got the same job through another legit SS a few hours later!

They called me tonight as well, for a job on Friday. I turned it down once I heard the particulars. As it was explained to me, they are a company that buys homes from distressed owners. They lease the property back to the distressed owner "until they can afford to buy it back". They o/n one set of docs to the owner, plus one set to the notary (that one gets signed). They offered $100 for the job. The guy said it's apporximately 50 pages and includes a Deed to be signed and notarized.

I declined because I am not comfortable being involved with that type of transaction.

I had an assignment scheduled with them but it was cancelled. They called about a month ahead to schedule the appointment and agreed to a decent fee. They called a week ahead of the appointment to tell me it was cancelled because the homeowner's mortgage company decided to do a loan modification. Apparently they buy the homeowner's home to prevent foreclosure, and rent it back to them. This is done as a last resort when the homeowner has run out of options. I did a search and the few who have done them considered it general notary work and no worries, so I didn't think much about it. However, I must admit I was relieved when it cancelled, mainly because I'd been thinking of what would happen in the event of a dispute later on down the road, and that seemed likely to happen.

I did about 3 jobs for them during the year. They paid well & promptly. One of them was for an attorney who had a RE Atty ck the papers out. He said all was in good order and was a very good program. Last one was a few mos ago. so I appreciate the update.

A fellow notary in this area accepted this job after I couldn't take it. He stated thereafter that this company attempted to submit a lease/purchase and have the notary sign ALTHOUGH we CANNOT in the state of South Carolina conduct Real Estate Closings on Property. He thought it was shady and declined the assignment.

I have worked for them in the past. They pay on time and seem to be a good company. Good luck.
