Calif. Notary Public Database
I don't know if someone has posted this and I missed it or not, but I just found this. The SOS in CA finally has the NP database online.

I've looked at it, after downloading it and looking at it in it's Txt format I wish they had did it in a CVS format, at least you can do something with it. However it is important info, just hard to work with. Good post though.

Calif. NP Database-importing into excel
James, after you download and open the zipped NP file, save the text file (active notary) to another location on your computer. Open Excel and click on data in the menu bar. Find the "import" button and click on it. An Excel wizard should open to guide you through the rest of the process and when you are done you you can sort to your heart's content! NOTE: When you import the file into Excel the format that the wizard should default to is delimited; the delimiters you want to use is tab/space.

importing into excel
should still work - I just changed over to 2007 just a couple of months ago from 2003 and the concept is the same as is the wizard to help work through the import. From either version you need to start in DATA off your main menu bar.

Re: importing into excel
Good news,...Dah......I just copied part of the file (after "reading" the read me file) and realizing I couldn't import the entire doc to excel...well I just cut and paste part of the file right into excel. Thanks for your guidance, ..never to old to read. LOL

Do you know when they posted it? I just found out last week, because I already got a signing as a result of the person locating me on that site.

According to the SOS website, they announced it 10-11-10. But I just heard about it this morning from the Paralegal Assn. I'm a member of.

And.... they also added
an Apostille verification - where you can check to see if an apostille was issued by the California Secretary of State’s office on or after October 1, 2006.
They're slowing getting into the 21st century, huh? ; )

It's been several months now, I know that I posted about it right about then, and it's been discussed a few times. I've had a couple of companies contact me as a result of that list. No complaints here. I'm glad they post the information.

If you want to see the entire file
If you don't have a database program you can get a complete office suite of programs for free (credit: openoffice.org) and see all the entire file using the database program. There is a small learning curve, however if you're used to using database programs it's not that bad. I fiddled with it it looked to be pretty robust little office suite, I keep saying I'm going to take the time to learn more and I'm still procrastinating....

There is a search-able database at another site --- notary dot net --- but it is limited to returning 250 entries. So, if you are looking for all the notaries in your city, it will stop at number 250. If you are looking for an individual, it works fine.
