By JOHN I. CARNEY ~ [e-mail address] A bill introduced by State Sen. Jim Tracy would, if approved by the General Assembly and signed by the governor, give notaries public the authority to conduct marriage ceremonies. "It came from a constituent," Tracy told the Times-Gazette last week. Tracy said the constituent had been asking for some time for Tracy to introduce it.
"It was new to me," said Tracy. He said he's not sure whether or not the bill will receive support from other state legislators.

Interestingly, if you go to the link and vote, 69% of the votes are NO. That puzzles me. What's wrong with Notaries performing marriages. pray tell?

My thoughts exactly, Frenchie...but...
then I thought about who IS doing the marriages now, and if you will notice the article says that they get to collect tips when they perform marriages. Perhaps they don't want to share the "bountiful income" from weddings!

It was posted a couple weeks ago.
I copy and pasted the TN Law about who all can perform marriages in TN--it is a long list.
