Purchasing Alcohol - New Law

Just learned a law enacted last July 1st means everyone gets carded when buying alcohol - even if you're obviously over age 21. I was in Target yesterday and an obviously older couple (white haired) was purchasing wine and the cashier asked for the man's ID. She input the man's birth date into the cash register in order to complete the purchase. Registers are now set up so that the transaction cannot continue until a birth date is entered into the system. I believe restaurants and bars are exempt meaning if you are obviously over 21, they are not required to card you but anyplace else such as stores, markets and liquor stores will be required to input the birth date.

Beware

I wasn't aware of the new law, but I was in Target recently (had a sale on Blue Moon beer. Yeah!) and she asked me for my ID - and instead of just checking my DOB, she instantly SWIPED my DL through the register. Which means Target (probably) now has all my DL info in their system. I can't imagine these store registers are set up to just selectively record only the DOB during the swipe. And of course all this info is now available to everybody in beverage control and whoever else in state government. Yet another avenue toward identity theft. By the way, Red Hawk casino did the same thing at their buffet. So now the Indians have my ID, too. Not to mention the UPS notary. (By the way, I only occasionally drink and gamble - really).

Re: Beware

Sounds like they may have the same type of system that the casinos have. I think those systems are set to verify the ID is valid and shows them the DOB and possibly the expiration date of the ID. I seem to recall a local story a while back about the systems because of the concern of how much info they might contain after a swipe of your DL.

Re: Beware

In some states it is law to keep copies of a customer's DL if they check into a motel--I learned this in Choice Hotels Training a few years ago.

Those DL readers record everything off the DL. Some motels use them. The idea is to speed up check-in time.

TN passed a law a few years ago that everyone must carded no matter.

I use my Tribal ID--Not my DL.

The truck stop my Mom works at was looking into putting in retina scanners for people using debit cards, credit cards and checks. It never happened though.

This has been Target's practice for several years in my area. I show my passport now, it doesn't come up with my address, and can't be swiped. I do not show my drivers license to just any one. (YOU SHOW ME YOURS AND I'LL SHOW YOU MINE?!). We're all part of a huge database or two whether we like it or not!

Don't be surprised when the next time you go into BevMo they may require your ID - and refuse to sell you alcohol if you don't provide it.

The article was about an Indiana state new law.

Neither Bruce nor I have been carded buying wine in the local stores.

This is about a law in Indiana...

... that went into effect last July. It has nothing to do with the rest of the country.

Just because it's not the law in other states doesn't mean other states won't follow suit. Many establishments from any state will (and have) adopt that requirement....and there will be nothing a customer can do except comply or be refused an alcohol purchase. Target isn't the only store that requires ID for alcohol purchase and inputs the birth date. The most recent time I purchased alcohol at Vons market, they also required ID and punched in my birth date in the register.....they didn't in past times but they do now.

"Just because it's not the law in other states doesn't mean other states won't follow suit"

That's true, but that's not what you said originally. What you SAID was that there is "a new law", as if it affects everyone. It doesn't.

The fact that some stores or chains in other states may be starting to use similar techniques does not mean that this is the wave of the future. Some grocery stores in this area started doing that for beer purchases several years ago, and then stopped because it was annoying the regular customers. That's what the customers can do about it - vote with their feet. When the stores realize they're losing sales to competitors who are more realistic about these matters, their policy will change.

Except in Indiana, where it is law. A stupid law, but no one ever said a law had to make sense to be enacted.

I wonder if this doesn't have to do with some sort of compliance or regulation set forth by the ABC.

...funny, we were dinner last night, and I ordered a Margarita (Patron of course), and the server asked if I was over 21...I beemed and said NOPE....my husband and I then started cracking up...but NOT the server...I told the server, I had a 21 year old...soooo....and that Margarita was wonderful...hmmmm.

We have similar law here in IL...and you'll get carded if you want to purcahse certain prescriptions behind the pharmacy counter made with the 'real stuff' in it, so my husband says...they take your information, punch it into the computer, then you have to sign and agree...PITA...

Re: not prescriptions, but over the counter drugs that have the

I've been swiping my DL for years for my sudafed. And I remember having lunch at a diner in MD once and they swiped my DL I was told they do it for everyone, something about alcohol restrictions from DUI's etc. are now available by swiping the DL. I don't know if there was any truth to that or not.
