Reverse Mortgage
I arrived at the loan application signing and as I expected, the borrower (frail & feeble) did not have a current photo ID. She gave me an expired DL and I explained to her we would need a current photo ID to complete the loan in the future. I took a picture of the expired ID with my camera/phone. The LO advised me they could start the application with the expired ID. Problem is, the quality of the camera/phone picture isn't very clear. My question is,,,, Does anyone use a portable scanner for this situation and how is it's quality? I hate submitting poor quality ID's even though I told the borrower what I needed when I confirmed the appointment. Any input will be appreciated.

I've been thinking about you - wondering how it went
Was wondering if you made your tee time...
I have an HP F380 that I carried until it decided to no longer work for me - cost me $80 and I did get my money's worth out of it...haven't fixed it yet so right now I don't have anything to accommodate those copies but boy do I miss it.
Many times, the LO will get together with a family member and have the family member send in the things required to complete the underwriting process. Just send in what you have - at least you tried..

Re: I've been thinking about you - wondering how it went
Thanks Linda. Yes, I made my tee time and it was diffucult. More challenging than golf. I saw a scanner at OfficeDepot today and think I will go back tomorrow to possibly buy it. $99 bucks. This situation happens to me about 4 times a month even after I tell the borrower what I need.
Sad thing here is she has no family. When we got to the page to list contacts she said she has none. We ended up listing her care giver and a neighbor.
I have a 92 yo mother in law in assisted care, but we still get 2-3 calls a day with problems. So I'm experienced and will get through this.

Portable Scanner
Yes Jim, I use a VuPoint PDS-ST410 that I got from Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $99.00. Had a $20.00 off coupon at the time so only paid $79.00. It works great. Got the info on it from a post on NotRot months ago.

Re: Portable Scanner
Seems like an odd item to have at Bed, Bath, and Beyond! I need to start saving their coupons as they will even take them when they are expired.

I carry an all-in-one in the back of my car to use to make
copies of ID. You'd be amazed how many times I've needed it. Also, I know that some are using the VuPoint wand scanner. I've never been comfortable taking a pic of people's ID. I had a cc compromised by a clerk that was taking pix of people's cc's with their phone. I like to make the borrowers comfortable by letting them see me copy their ID in front of them. Not a requirement, but it's good for customer service. As far as your client is concerned, it's been discussed several times about some states being able to go to people's homes to do their state ID.

I love my vupoint scanner. I also have my digital camera in my car at all times for work and pleasure.

Thanks Marilynn. I'm going to buy a portable scanner tomorrow. This happens to me about 3-4 times a month even though I tell the borrower what I need during the confirmation call. The back of my car has golf clubs, so a portable scanner is more practical.
I'm not sure how Arizona works with regard to obtaining photo ID's, but I advised her care giver to contact MVD to find out.

I carry a small digital camera in my bag. Can't tell you how many times it has saved the day when I got to the borrower's house and asked if they made copies of their ID and they look at you with a blank stare and say, Oh my, I forgot to and the copier either doesn't work, out of ink or out of paper. For about $100 it save all sort of time and aggravation.

Me too, MW/VA
I also carry a lightweight all-in-one in my car for signings. It cost $40 and has more than paid for itself. Not only has it saved the day when the borrowers didn't make the requested photocopies, but it has also been a great customer service tool. When the borrower is concerned about giving up originals of a particular document (and they have no other copy on hand) I can make extra copies for them of that original on the spot - and they are happy campers.

Ditto. That way I have the ID copy in hand & don't have to
wait to download & print before shipping docs.

All states should do that for those that are disabled and in nursing homes.
