The latest Adobe Reader version

I have declined to load the latest version of the Adobe Reader because of postings on NotRot that indicated some people were having problems with it.

Today, I received a supplementary 54-page packet of loan docs that I was unable to print, and had major problems even downloading. Last night, I had downloaded and printed a 114-page packet on the same loan from the same company from the same website with no problem. When I discussed it with the company, they said the source of the problem was the version of Adobe I was using. The version is the one immediately preceding Version 9.

Is anyone still having problems with Adobe Version 9, and is there a workaround?

I use Adobe 9.1.2 and only have problems with docs from 2 companies, ASAP Pro Notary and TransStar Notary. Any docs on those come up as jibberish when I open it through Firefox. However, if I open it through IE the issue is resolved. Other than that I've had no problem with this version of Adobe.

Hugh, it may not be Adobe 9 that's the problem version. Seems like there was a version other than that which was causing problems. Probably show up in search.

Adobe X may be the problem version...

Rich do a search. I paid Adobe to take off 9.4 cause it wouldn't come off then me (the idiot) paid them to put x on I specifically asked if attachments sent in a smaller version would be an issue "NO I WAS TOLD". Well now I'm bald I've been pulling my hair out from the stress. The legal size was doing the same thing your complaining about. So I took it off and reinstalled 9.4.1. My computer still wouldn't print pkgs right so I uninstalled the printers and reinstalled them. Thank goodness I'm printing ok now. I'm calling Amex to cancel the charge, these jokers don't have a clue what they are doing. Get X off your computer. PAW has no problems with it he must have majic fingers!!!

Re: Same as LindaH.

I have Adobe 9.4 on one computer and X on another. Multiple problems with X but must use it for several companies. Has anyone tried the free Easy PDF Reader that Google Chrome is pushing. Every time Adobe updates there seems to be major issues.

What I'm getting is that it should be okay to load anything except Adobe X.

If anyone disagrees with this assessment, please chime in. I'm going to do something in the next 24 hours. Thanks.

Fortunately I have never had a problem with any Adobe reader including X. There are other readers such as "cute" pdf reader, another free download, if you want to try something different. Just do a web search.

Re: The latest Adobe Reader version; tip for Mac Users

this works for Mac if you have a problem with Adobe. Download the file, be sure that Adobe is closed, open Preview, then open the file with preview, then hit print. That's a tip given to me by HP customer service, haven't had a problem since with strange characters, missing characters, etc. But then, I am a senior character myself.
Seriously, this should solve things for most printers if you are using a Mac.

I'm using version 8.2.1 & never have any printing problems.

I'm also still using Windows XP Prof. I stick with what works & had problems with Adobe Reader when I tried to update to the 9.something versions a while back. PAW had provided the link on how to download older versions, thankfully.

Re: I'm using version 8.2.1 & never have any printing problems.

I upgraded to 9.whatever, and have never had a problem. I'm holding off on Adobe X (why are companies now moving to Roman numerals for their latest releases???) because of the reported problems, but the 9 series seems to work just fine. There has been talk in the past that you MUST remove all traces of previous versions before upgrading, but that's never been a problem for me.

I am also a believer in sticking to whatever works, and am also still using Win/XP. When I was still working in IT, we had two basic rules: a) if it ain't broke, don't fix it; and b) you can always tell the pioneers because they're the ones with the arrows in their backs. Words to live by...

Thanks for naming operating system - could make a difference

It would be very helpful if people who mentioned that are are having problems or that it's working great would also mention which OS they are using on their computer, as that seems to make a big difference.

I still have Adobe 9.4.1, which I've been using (with Vista Home, 32 bit) for some time now with no problems. The last couple of days, though, I've been getting the prompts from Adobe to update to the latest version (X). So far, I've declined, too, as I have no idea from what's been posted here, what the factors are that make it unworkable for dual tray printers to be able to print the bottom of legal size pages. When they mention that there are "security issues" or that it's designed to fix "vulnerabilities", though, it does get my attention.

So if anyone has more info on what makes the difference, I'd love to hear it! Smile

More than just the utility itself and operating system

There are so many factors involved when trying to determine why something works in one environment and not the other. Of course, the two biggest factors are the version of the software program and the version, and patch level, of the operating system. But, even deeper than that, there is a whole bunch of "memory resident" pieces that may effect how any other piece of code may execute. Then there's also the firmware level of the hardware, and the drivers between the software and hardware. The list goes on. We may never find out what is causing a problem.

I had a recent experience when all of a sudden some of my long-time resident programs stopped working correctly. Then, out of the blue, they started working again. As it turned out, after much digging and trial and error testing, an update to my security system was bad. After getting a fresh copy of the update and reinstalling it, everything was back to normal. The daunting thing about the update is that it really didn't have any logical connection to the problem. But, somewhere deep inside the code, it broke when a unique set of circumstances presented itself. Dontcha just luv teknaliggy?
