printer problem
I'm having an issue with my brother printer, it is leaving a black 1/4 inch mess on the right edge of my paper, the full length of a legal sheet. I called Brother and they wouldn't help because I'm not using a Brother cartridge. Can anyone shed any light on how to fix this issue?

Re: I bet you 1 million dollars
They no talka to you. They no talka to me either because I was not standing next to my printer. They no talka me because I could not tell them exactly when I changed my cartridge. I returned my printer for full price on my Office Depot extended warrantee. Yes full money back. I went and bought an HP. I was told by my local printer repair man that he will not ever ever ever work on brother for the same reason. I hate brothers custermer service. Never will ever buy anther one. Good luck

I think someone once suggested
possibly changing the cartridge again (maybe the one in there is defective) and make sure you clean the corona wire really well...

Re: I think someone once suggested
There's no corona wire on a Brother printer (at least, I've never found one on mine...). This problem sounds like either a bad drum or a bad cartridge, and if the problem started when the cartridge was changed, that would be the first thing I would suspect. Some of the after-market toner cartridge providers have questionable QC....
Returning the printer is basically the same as throwing out the baby with the bath water - the printer is probably fine, it's the expendables that might be a little questionable.

Re: I think someone once suggested
I have Three Brother printers i use for printing docs. They are all different models and all have corona wire cleaners. from what you are describing, cleaning the corona wire will not help you. it sounds like you have a bad toner cartridge. I usually fill mine most of the time, I also have purchased OEM and second party cartridges ie LD products. When I refill an OEM or non OEM cartridge too many times I sometimes get what you are describing. I sometimes get a cartridge from a secondary supplier that way as well. I would try another cartridge. Hope that helps.

Bad cartridge ..............
I have printed hundreds of thousands of pages on my two Brothers without issue, except when I refill a cartridge once too often. Then I get exactly what you describe. They also have corona wires, but as Larry says, that ain't your problem.
Make sure your printer is clean also. I take mine out to the garage and blow them out with compressed air from time to time.

Re: Bad cartridge ..............
Glenn, you are correct.I have 3 Brother printers and refill my cartridges.I can usually get 4-5 refills before the seal gives out on the right side of the cartridge.I've even tried, without sucess to replace that seal but I can't seem to find the right material that will stand up to the heat the fuser generates.
If this is a new cartridge, it's defective.

With some printers, it might be better to use a shotgun...

Re: I think someone once suggested
Larry, I, too, used LD products for my toners until I started getting too many toners that had problems. I buy my brother toners at pcnation.com...seem to be much cheaper than office stores and very close in price to LD products for actual Brother toners.

I stand corrected
There actually IS a tab on the Brother drum that apparently is used to clean the corona wire - I was unaware of it until PAW pointed it out to me... I've had this puppy for about 6 years, and never knew the tab was there. My bad...

With any printer, 1st try changing the
cartridge. If your problem still persists then it's time to take step two.
I only use HP printers. My deceased husband used to repair printers and the most reliable one is the HP. And easy to get parts for. Starting out in the business, he had to take all the service calls he could get and they are all PITA's except HP.

That's why you always keep the original cartridge that came with the printer and then use the knock off. When you have a problem and the original cartridge is in the printer, then they give you service. I have a couple of HP printers and their tech service plays the same game and won't help if a knockoff cartridge is in the printer. Don't think it's just Brother.

How do they know if it is a knockoff or an OEM in the printer?

I think they were asked and told the truth? They took a pic and posted to online help center, forgetting the Indians read English?

I had the same problem and it was the drum. Consider replacing the drum if you can't return it under warranty.

OK, ORs response notwithstanding, I'll weigh in and try to HELP. 1st, a little information, please. What model, what machine? That's the 1st and most important question. How many toners have you put through this drum? Are you keeping a record? Did you RTFM? it's available online. Have you reached the end of useful life for that drum? What are the specs (life) for YOUR drum. A bad toner cartridge ( people have been complaining recently about some aftermarket toners) can take out and destroy a drum for a Brother, so in this case it might be YOUR fault, and drum and toner BOTH need to be replaced at the same time now to resolve the problem. Lastly, the key to good cust. service from Brother is to call 7 or 8 to 4 M-F, and if necessary ASK for US based customer support. They are excellant in most cases, and yes they DO expect you to be using their equipment and supplies if they are going to support it. If you kept the original cartridge than you'd be good to go. They can't fix/ troubleshoot someone else's cartridge. You don't call Samsung for an HP problem, right?
