Public closing in public library
I was sitting on the floor behind some shelves at the public library, (my eyes just won't focus on that bottom shelf any other way) when I became aware of a loan closing going on at a table on the other side of the book shelf. What caught my attention was hearing the Bo read her Soc Sec number aloud. Perhaps most people would have been unaware of them because they would not have recognized the discussion of loan docs but I can't help but think how easy it would have been to make notes of somebody's personal info if I had wanted to.
I make this post as a reminder to us all to be aware of our surroundings when closing in a public place.

I did one saturday at a Mc Donalds. They were in the area camping. I cautioned them about saying anything out loud about their personal information. The only ones that seemed interested in what we were doing was the toddler behind me.

While I have yet to conduct a closing in a library, for the notarizations I have done I usually try to get a table in the back or at least away from the general crowds. Both of the libraries close to me have small rooms--with doors--for study groups or groups that would be having discussions that would be disruptive to the other patrons and a time limit for how long you can use the room. For a loan closing my first choice would be to get one of those rooms. Even if it meant "evicting" an individual who may have overstayed their time simply because no one else needed the room.

I used a closed door study room yesterday for a signing
Never in my right mind would I have someone read any part of their documents out loud...that's drinking crazy juice right there. You can't help some people and maybe they did so without instruction.
I also get out of the way tables and pay the staff to not seat anyone next to us while we are there. In the event this won't work I get there early and remove all the chairs in the tables around where I'll be so people can't move-in and sit.

That's a slick trick providing it is not lunchtime.

Well, I've been signing doc's for a long time, so I've developed what I consider to be an efficient method of presenting doc's. I simply point! Mr. Borrower this is your new loan amount, paying-off your current loan and closing costs, yada, yada, yada. Please check your SSN, Phone #, Birthday here on the 1003. Point - Point -Point! The presentation is always punctuated with: Questions Mr. or Mrs.? There is no misinterpretation and Nobody has a clue about anything going on except us at the table.
