Do they serve any actual business purpose for notaries?
I am considering purchasing one because I work in the higher education setting and they are everywhere. I would like to know if you all are using them for business or are they internet tablets to you.

I have first-gen ipad, 32BG with wi-fi. I LOVE IT!
I don't really use it for business purposes, though. I use it for reading books, watching movies, playing games, etc. Mostly, it's an around the house type of tool, too, for recipes, etc.
I don't think it has much of a business use for me, at the moment.... but I can tell you that I can't imagine not having it around.

Marian, would you say that they could be used as a signature
pad? (Finger signing.) Or, could a signature pad be hooked up to one for electronic notarization?
I am seeing signature apps on the Android Marketplace that even have the identifying pressure points, etc.

Re: Marian, would you say that they could be used as a signature
I've heard that anything is technically possible with the ipad... and lots of businesses have custom developed apps for their businesses. Mine os great... but I jjust haven't really done much with it outside of home use. Netflix and HuluPlus are wonderful on the ipad. Just plain awesome.
BTW, we bought ours used... so we got a good deal. I'm not sure I could justify paying full price for one right now. At least, not me.
I know that plenty of businesses accept credit cards with their ipads now, customers just sign with their finger, and there's a small device attached to swipe a card.
I doubt that there is any kind of electronic notary journal developed for that purpose just yet.... but I'm sure it's just a matter of time given this:

Re: Tell me about yjour IPads
Have top of the line ipad the only one who uses it is Ashley our 3 yr old. She watches cartoons on netflix and plays games. Big waste of money has a good battery life. Will not play flash apps.

Yep...they look fun. I would love cartoons on Netflix.
I just don't think that I can justify that.

I thought I read on the one of the forums about a co. that was using them for e-signings. I'm thinking they said they sent it to the notary to have the docs signed & then the notary returned the I-Pad to them. Was I dreaming this or do you remember reading something about it??? LOL

Idea for a great new accessory:
A twelve year old kid to show you how to use the silly thing.

My husband got me one a few weeks ago, I am thrilled with it. Took it to FL to be with my mom while she waited for biopsy results (brain tumor), got the results and was able to take a picture of the report and send it (while still at the mayo clinic) to my brother in CO. While staying at my brother's house I noticed his hose reel was broken, it needed a part but I had no idea which one, took a picture of it, showed it to a man at Ace hardware and got it fixed. Then My mom and I flew to CO, I was able to book our flights and have the boarding pass, directions from the Denver airport to my brothers house in Vail, and the rental car confirmation all on my iPad.
Best use by far though was when I took my mom to visit a local internist in CO Dr. asked me what kind of brain tumor my mom has, I told her stage 2, she said no, I need to know what kind it is. I had no idea but remembered I had all the reports from the Mayo clinic on my iPad, she was able to read them and know exactly what was happening with my mom! That alone was worth what ever it cost.
I have an ipad2 with wi fi but not the 3G or 4G, didn't want to pay the monthly fee. I was able to pick up wifi just about every where I went, even in a mcdonalds parking lot when I got lost in ponte vedra. There are so many fun apps that are free, I get books from our library for free (14 day checkout).
Highly recommend but not sure how I would use it for work right now but I'm sure I will figure something out, problem with using unsecure wifi is they are unsecured! Hope that helps.

Outstanding review, anotary in VA. If I may ask, how did yo
you get the reports onto the iPad?
Thanks.

It did help anotaryinva! I am salivating.
It is my understanding that you can do a pay as you go plan with the 3G/4G & Verizon or AT&T...oh the darn decisions. I spent all day yesterday researching tablets.

My iPad 2 is priceless
Many times I have used it to look something up, show the borrowers something in black and white, or display a photo.
My iPad 2 is WiFi ONLY, 64 Gig, black.
For Justice of the Peace appointments (where the couple interviews me and I them), the iPad is even more valuable. Showing people locations, unity ceremonies, clothing options (robe, suit, etc.), and so on has been one important factor in why people choose me to marry them. Being able to show prospective couples photos of ceremonies that I've performed gives the couple confidence that I do know how to give people great wedding ceremonies.
iPads are NOT computers. They serve limited purposes, but serve them extremely well.

Well I am using an Iphone, with a Notary application called INotary, free application and you pay for credits for log entries, 16.00 for 100 entries or 35 per year includes cloud storage and so far is a great application. www.myinotary.com
