Thumbtack.com
I thought they were just another free general directory where, if you wanted, you could pay to upgrade for a premium listing. Little did I know they charge you for the first lead. You can pay $4 one time and upfront then they'll release the contact info for that lead. The lead may or may not result in a completed appointment. If you want the lead first, you have to promise 8% of the fee you'd collect if the lead results in a completed appointment. So if you get the contact info for the lead first and it results in - for example - a $100 notary job, then you owe Thumbtack.com 8% of that $100 - which is $8.
I'm actually surprised that I even got a lead because when I signed up, they would publish my home address instead of just the city and state and I told them that was not acceptable. I only allowed my address for registration purposes and not to be published but they would not agree to publish only my city and state so I didn't complete the listing. I would get emails from time to time to complete my listing but just deleted the email because I refused to publish my full home address.
Then I get this email that I have a lead so I responded to the requester that I was available on the date and time she needed and gave my fee. When I hit "send", then I'm taken to another screen where I must choose how I would pay for this lead - upfront at $4 or later at 8% of the fee I collect for the notary job. The fee is "one time". When I saw that.... I clicked the back button and instead of "reply" I clicked on "pass on this lead" and gave a comment as to why - I don't pay for leads (not even for "one time") and please delete my listing if this is the way their site operates.
Besides, someone from Thumbtack.com may have called their cousin and told them to pretend to need a Notary.......just so they could get me to pay for the lead.....if they do that to enough people, $4 bucks could add up. $4 is cheap enough so that people will think, "Awe, what's four lousy bucks?" Sorry, not even paying $4 "one time".
