"Will you drive 82 miles one way...

..in rural Indian Country for a huge pkg BOA loan with faxbacks? I'm authorized to go up to $125 since you're background checked."
Let me think. Wait. Um. No. "Are you sure? We have attorneys that will drive farther for less."
GREAT! Hire one of them!

Heck No!! I would have to add $100 just for the mileage let alone the fax backs which add another $15. Let them get the lawyer!!

Hey Pam, I checked your zip and there are only 13 notaries with 30 miles of you (NR Search). Hold out for $250, that's probably what they can go up to.

I would not. Do you have to drive back home the same day? or are they putting you up for the night? Just joking. In anycase, they would have to pay me a substantial amount to drive 182 miles to do a notary signing...

I've driven that far before... and longer... but you darn well better believe I got paid for it! I had one a few months ago just north of Los Angeles, and they were desperate. This was a 2 hour drive for me... and they wanted it done that evening. The borrower was "extremely important" to them and they were only calling their absolutely trusted notaries to get it done. The borrower was somebody "in the industry" and I was to meet with them on a TV set.

I found it hard to believe that they couldn't find ANYONE closer, but they said they couldn't. I quoted them over $300, knowing full well that they wouldn't pay me to do it. It happened to be that I had an errand I had to run in that direction anyway... not necessarily that day, but eventually, so I figured I could do both. I got the "I've got to get that approved" line.... and shockingly they called me back, approved it AND offered to put me up in a hotel that night (a Hilton, on their account), on the condition that I drove the package to their offices the next morning (it was about 20 minutes from the hotel). They said if I did that for them, they'd have my check waiting for me when I dropped off the docs.

I didn't even hesitate to accept.

Clearly... I don't get many like that. But I am asked to drive 60-90 minute distances all the time. Those jobs are always $175-$250 or more, depending on the circumstances. $125?? Yeah... not happening.

All we need to do to see is how ridiculous is that fee is to multiply the total miles by the IRS allowance for auto mileage (presumably a government estimate of an average cost of operating a vehicle) and we get $90. Subtract printing costs and that leaves precious little. I don't know how much time that distance would take in your area, but no doubt that fee would have put you below minimum wage levels. I've tried that tactic with agencies before and most seem to get the point...
