I haven't had any problem with Gmail at all. The article says that 40,000 users were affected - a really, REALLY small number overall (unless your were part of it), and hardly a reason to dump them. There was a much bigger uproar a couple of months ago when Hotmail somehow managed to lose a ton of user's archived messages - now THAT would make me want to drop an email provider.
My experience so far over the past few years has been that Gmail is much more reliable than the alternatives. I have a number of email accounts, with a Yahoo account as my primary personal account, and a Gmail account I am using for business. Have never had a problem with it (knock on wood...).
As always, your mileage may vary...
