Just in case...
I'd be interested in knowing how you found out about this and if there's any chance at all that this is a spoofed website. In other words, how sure are you that this link and the free offer are valid? I guess I'm just hyper-sensitive to giving out this much personal information online. The form has way more than enough information on it for someone to steal a person's identity.
If it's on the level, sounds like a pretty doggone good deal!
Thanks!

Re: Just in case...
Hell ya! IF this is real, no reason for ALL of us to not do it for FREE, whether we need it or NOT! Just doesn't ring true to me either, as I paid for it last year through Lexis. Be glad to update mine immediately, if we can verify this. Haven't tried to do so yet as I've been workin on other issues today. Be glad to simply have the updated verification for myself, if this is true for FREE.

Kinda sounds too good to be true, no?
I also wonder what reasons they would have for giving this away if that's their primary business. Could it be an attempt to upsell people maybe?

Re: Kinda sounds too good to be true, no?
I got a free Lexis Nexis BGC in Nov 2009 and it is about 35 pages long. It includes a criminal check (it found the ticket I got a few years ago for having a brake light out) and it has been accepted by every company that has asked me for a BGC. It lists all the residences that I have lived at since I was a teenager, and it also lists the people that have owned those homes since then. It lists my brother-in-law's parents as people who I may associate with, along with some other people that I don't know.

It's not done online.
There's a form to fill in, proof of ID to send and it's snailmailed. I'm guessing that this is the same yearly freebie as being entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the big 3 bureaus. Google "LexisNexis Consumer Center". It's legit. As CopperheadVA said, it's accepted. Kiss XYZ b-bye.

Correction.... maybe not so good
Doesn't seem to include a criminal background check. At least, I haven't found that yet. So... not good enough? Copperhead, can you add some real experience here? Tho', I truly believe that "as long as they have something official-looking in their file, they are happy".

definitely not so good
The freebie does not include a criminal background check...which is one criteria that hiring entities want. There are numerous different reports available. I'm just starting to poke around on that huge site. However, there is one for $24.95 that ought to work: https://topcandidate.lexisnexis.com/TC/welcome.do?topcandidate

Re: definitely not so good
It was posted on this forum last year. You download an application off of the link. Fill it out and send it in by snail mail. I think they say it could take 4 to 6 weeks. Mine came back in 2 weeks and it was 10 pages and that's what I send to every one that asks for BGC and no one has said anything about it not being good. I doubt if any even checks for what it says.

Re: definitely not so good~Question
For those who have done the LexisNexis BGC~When a comp asks you for this, do they receive the whole report with all your personal info on there, or do they just get a summary page stating pass or fail? Also, do you send the report to a said company or does LexisNexis?
I have been researching on getting a BGC as I wouldnt mind having one if it indeed would make some comps happy, but what I dont want is my personal info floating around everywhere.
As I told a company yesterday, I too, have a right to protect my identity and privacy. Completing a BGC and giving a said company a summary form of the BGC should be sufficient, IMO.

Reply by jba/fl on 3/8/11 8:37am Msg #375419
I send only the page that says Pass. That is sufficient.
I also don't care to have my info everywhere. I now have in my email Inbox a request from 2 companies to send them all kinds of info. I keep telling them when I get an assignment, I will be happy to comply, but since I don't know how they maintain their records,, etc., that they can just wait. These are companies I have never done business with, also reps for being low pay, that I just can't see sending them my info.
Heck, if they don't want to pay well, they probably don't spend much on security. JMHO

Correcting everything I said & was wrong about
It is a huge site...with tons of different kinds of reports. The more you poke around and read, the more info there is to absorb. The link provided by Felise IS CORRECT and will get you a very extensive report that does include a national criminal check. And, yes, it is free once a year. Lisa, I can't answer your question because I've not actually done this yet. But I'm going to do so today. As it seems that various things are checked by different entities under the LexisNexis umbrella, I would 'assume' that each thing checked comes on a separate 'report', so I'd guess you could just not include that particular page (like how many home owner's insurance claims you've submitted---I don't think Lender, TC or SS care about that).

Re: Correcting everything I said & was wrong about
Thanx Lee and Julie.
Im going to stand my ground with the comps who demand my personal info.
One comp in particular says they will accept another BGC from a different source than they use, buuuuut, if you choose this method, they want you to fill out a Statement of Residence and also sign a form allowing them to share whatever info they have on you with the clients they have which could include an Investigative Report. When I did some research on this, an Investigative Report could include such things as talking to your neighbors and really digging into your everyday personal life.
The Statement of Residence requires your SS# and that is a big no-no for me. And sharing my info with anyone they seem fit, just doesnt sit well with me.
I will not follow the pied piper

Re: One more thing......
It seems all common sense has gone down the drain in these situations. When a person has been in business for so many years with testimonials and references of the work they do, isnt that some kind of recognition of their character as far as being ethical and forthright??
I guess I dont understand why they arent looking at the whole picture instead of having this tunnel vision with blinders on.

Couldn't agree more...
Warning.... should be in JP or maybe we need another forum called "Just Rants"? 1. The demise of common sense is the saddest thing I've seen in my lifetime. 2. That and the whole 'gotta be PC' thing that gets carried to absurd extremes. 3. That certain national organizations have pushed their 'lack of common sense' agenda for the sole purpose of increasing their revenue. I'll stop now.

Re: Correcting everything I said & was wrong about
Here is what mine shows regarding criminal background:
Possible Criminal Records:
Virginia Court: It lists my ticket from 2006 and the offense, which was improper brake lights. It also shows it as dismissed, which it was after I provided proof to the court that I had fixed the brake light. I have had no other tickets for 25 years, so no other tickets are listed.
Court Activity: None found
Sexual Offenses: None found
Florida Accidents: None found (not sure why that is on there - I've never lived in Florida)
Hunting/Fishing Permit: None found
Concealed Weapons Permit: None Found
This free Lexis Nexis BGC does NOT have a summary page that lists pass/fail. I send the entire thing to companies, but I only do it with large national companies that have privacy policies in place, such as LSI for example. I have not sent one to a signing service, because like Julie said I have not received work from those companies and most of the time I will not sign their contracts, so there's no point in sending the BGC to them - they won't meet my fees anyway.

The reason it is free is because they collect information on consumers, which they then sell in a variety of different ways. You have a right to review the information that they have collected on you. That's why it's a full consumer disclosure. They encourage you to review your report to make sure that the information that they have on you is correct. If an employer or potential landlord were to do a background check, they would have to pay for it. You are only able to order report on yourself, a minor you have guardianship over, or someone you have power of attorney over. Anyone who took the time to review the website would understand this
