I am having repeated problems...

...with emails bouncing. I use Yahoo; the recipient's email service has varied. The last bounced message read:

"Message expired for domain hotmail.com. Remote host said: 421 RP-001 Unfortunately, some messages from 98.139.212.174 weren't sent. Please try again. We have limits for how many messages can be sent per hour and per day. You can also refer to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors."

When I went to the url cited I got this:

"The mail server IP connecting to Windows Live Hotmail server has exceeded the rate limit allowed. Reason for rate limitation is related to IP/domain reputation. If you are not an email/network admin please contact your Email/Internet Service Provider for help."

What is this about the problem being related "to IP/domain reputation?" Are there some IP/domains that are village sluts? Do some beat their spouses? Are there lawyers amongst the IP/domains?

Will someone who is not technologically mired in the eight-track era like yours truly please explain to me what's going on, and what I can do about it? Thanks.

IP/Domain reputation refers to the level of spam and/or viruses a given IP address has been generating. A domain may have a number of mail servers, each with its own IP address (Yahoo has over 5000 of them); some may be fine, others may have been compromised by spammers.

There's a tool here you can use to check a domain's reputation:

http://www.reputationauthority.org/index.php

A check of Yahoo.com shows that there are hundreds of its servers listed as "bad" or "suspect", and quite a few are in the US - it sounds like your email is being routed through one of them. The bounced message may include your original message header, which usually indicates the IP address used to send your email (look for a tag that says "Sent from" or "X-Originating-IP"); if so, you can check that IP address specifically on the site I posted above.

Unfortunately, I don't know how you fix the problem on your end because you can't select which mail server to use. You'll have to talk to Yahoo about that.

Thanks, Mike.

I gather that some servers are indeed wife-beaters.
