Must have been the Birkenstocks...

I got a call last night from a scheduler named Ray from ASAP Pro.
Offered $XXX I countered $XXX they agreed after telling me they had
to get it approved. I didn't expect a CB but they did within 5 mins.

After I read their confirmation letter and instructions, I wrote back.....

Hello, I read your instructions. Two things in your instructions that bother me,
..I wear Birkenstock shoes which may be considered sandals by some.
I have been wearing the brand for over twenty-five years. 2nd, I will NOT agree
to any fee reductions, I do not make errors such as mentioned in items
#4 ( I do not do fax backs without negotiating beforehand) or #8.
I prefer to be paid Net 30....45 days is out of the question for me. Pls advise

The reply was...

From: "DJ Thie" <[e-mail address]>

Add sender to Contacts To: "'Kerri Ruth'" <[e-mail address]> Cc: "'Asap Pro Notary Services'" <[e-mail address]>, [e-mail address] I have reassigned this order.

Thanks

Oh well,..win some lose some. Must have been the Birkenstocks..LOL

Sounds like a WIN-WIN to me!
You win because you did not have to do a job for nothing, or have some slow wit ‘reduce’ your fee for some nonexistent reason.
You win because some time in May or June you don’t have to chase your money.
You win because it’s your business, and you needn’t suffer fools.

Disagree here...

I will disagree here James. In my opinion appropriate attire is a must for all my signings. What type of pants are you wearing with those "sandals"? Again this is just my opinion.

Re: Disagree here...

In the bay Area Birks are the norm....there are many, many different types, $100.00 up....Mine are dressy and can be worn with a suit. I have worked all over the U.S. and what works in some places will not work in others. I wear "docker" dress pants and I don't wear wing-tips!

Re: Disagree here...

I have a pair of $200 Birkenstocks that would look fine with a suit (not a dress though).

Interesting, James. How many companies do you get that

agree to your terms? I regularly work for ASAP & don't have any problems with them. Yes, payment runs a little slower than I'd like, but I can always count on getting paid.
I personally wouldn't have made an issue of the Birks, assuming you're not going in shorts & flip-flops. You've worked in the business world for many years & fully understand the need for dress-codes. It's all about interpretation. I live in a resort area & wear capri pants & sandals in the summer (more dressy, of course). I'm always appropriately dressed, however, and act professionally at all times.

Re: Interesting, James. How many companies do you get that

Most companies ask that you dress Professionally, I do. Over 1/2 the homes here are " no shoes" homes so it is very easy to slip in and out of Birks, leave at the front door. I do NOT go barefoot.

Agree to my terms? Hell yes, or I don't work for them. No work agreements, pay 30 days or less, no faxbacks and Docs two hours before appt and don't call me and ask is everything is alright or has the borrower signed yet......that's my choice and yes, I don't get the volume of calls you all get because of that, thank God!

They never want to meet my fee. However the few times they have met my fee, I have had to remind them to pay me each time. And every time their response is always the same, "Gee I don't know why it didn't go out on the last run. We'll print it on the next run." Every time I've worked for them it's been 50 - 60 days before the payment reached me.

I'm with you, JD!

Seems these SSs are a one-way street, and the moment a notary stands up for him/herself, it's "we'll find somebody else who will play ball." Usually, it's over far more important things than attire - but it's your business, your rules and the slow-pay thing is a deal-killer.

As far as "professional attire" goes, I don't know what kind of outfits notaries have been showing up in - they must be pretttty bad to outdo what I regularly see Realtors and LOs wear - which mostly look like they just got outfitted at a garage sale. Then there's the ho look - with boobs falling out all over the place, spike heels, tight skirts. Then, again, this is California where anything goes. Sometimes I feel like a Brooks Brothers dork when the lender and Realtor are in spray-on jeans, knee-high spike-heel boots, and tiiiiight tops. And I'm with you on the Birks for easy slipoff. At least half of my jobs are with Asians and Arab borrowers - all of whom make it clear to leave shoes at the door. And plenty of WASPY types do too nowadays... my job footwear is easy slip-off. With socks, of course, cos there's no way I'm doing a signing barefooted.

Re: I'm with you, JD!

I was in Blackhawk last week and the LO had on fire engine red harem pants that made her look like "balloon on fire" but I didn't trip,..it's California.

When I hear the word Birkenstocks, I flash really ugly sandles. But, you know there are better versions and how you are wearing them, etc. I think there should be no discussion as to footwear. Nobody has ever asked me what I wear on my feet, although they may have outlined a dress code.

It is all in the eyes of the beholder. If you think you are going to blend with those you are meeting with, then fine. Although those red harem pants looking like a balloon on fire is not something I would care to blend with....not hardly.

they are a good SS, but yeah, those that you mentioned

are "interesting" to say the least.

They are considerered one of my clients, and trust, since they have a very good track record with me as far as paying MY fee and I receive payment no more than 30 days out.

But you did what you had to do, and with your experience from that 'other' SS (that which will NOT be given free advertising here) I don't blame you for stickin' to your guns!

You win some...you lose some!
