I looked at those, but
they have very short battery live and there is no way to turn off the 4G to save.

Every time my 2 year contract is up with ATT, I shop around for new phones and new service. I only shopped Verizon this time because of the horrible financial shape T-Mobile and Sprint are in. Also, my wife likes her iPhone, so Verizon would be the only other option. And in T-Mobile's case the new phone company would have been the old phone company.
I found that Verizon is a lot more expensive for the kind of plan we have. So ......... I just got a Motorola Bravo Android because it was free (+taxes) and my wife is happy with her iPhone.
ATT service doesn't seem to be an issue here locally. Verizon has the coverage issues out in the Mojave Desert.

We tried it in the Verizon store and
couldn't get it to work .......
Perhaps we didn't do something right, but the sales person in the store called HTC tech support and they said it's always on when there is 4G available whether you wanted it or not.
Let me know how it works in practice.

Oh, Glenn - I don't have one. I still have a basic phone
w/camera which I don't care to use for photos. Just want a phone that rings - a lot! LOL

Ordered mine today
Actually, I replaced my Droid with a Droid X 14 days ago so that I could tether to my laptop when needed and get rid of my $60 a month wireless card. Before I bought it, I asked "Now am I going to buy this 3G phone and you come out with 4G next week?" I was told 4G was a long way off.
5 days later I get an email that 4G is available. Everyone at the stores and call center have told me they got 2 days notice. Funny I closed for an ATT manager about a month ago and he told me to "wait" - I didn't. Apparently, the competition knew this was coming out before the Verizon employees did. LOL
I like the Droid just fine and it worked as a hotspot effectively. However, it took me 7 minutes to attach a 5 MB file of a scanned file to email. My brother has a 4G and it is screaming fast compared to the 3G.
So I am returning my droid and getting this 4G phone and paying the $35 restocking fee. I can't wait to test the internet times out.
