Expired photo ID on homebound customer
I had this happen and started freaking out then she had a military id with photo. Whew!!! Just curious what procedure everyone uses.

It depends on your State law.

I just looked at the AR manual -
wow is all I can say - they don't even give you a HINT as to what's "acceptable ID" and what to do in this instance - it doesn't even mention Credible Witnesses!!
Here as in many other states, absent any other form of ID, Credible Witnesses can be used. CW's would fit here because she's "homebound", rendering it "difficult if not impossible" for her to get ID.
My suggestion to you is to call your SOS and ask them how you're to handle this type of situation....at least for future reference for those people who don't have an alternate photo ID to give you.

Re: I just looked at the AR manual -
i thought if it was expired within 5 years and was photo ID, it was okay. at least that's how it used to be when i worked in california......don't quote me. that notary class was a LONG time ago :-)

Each state is different, Colleen...
In FL, if the ID is expired it must have been issued within the past 5 years...
Arizona is silent on the matter.

AZ not silent ... AR is though
"2. AN UNEXPIRED DRIVER LICENSE THAT IS ISSUED BY A STATE OR TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES"

As AR really has no specifics beyond 'notary's greatest responsibility is to be certain of the identity' and a 'good guide would be to require proper identification'.... which does NOT include only an ID expired by less than 5 years OR Credible Witnesses... but does 'seem' to allow us to use some intelligence (by not prohibiting it). I have gone with 'preponderance of evidence', as long as they have some photo ID and a whole bunch of stuff in their possession that has the same name on it.... birth cert., SS, V. Reg, etc., etc. I have always walked away when they could produce nothing valid or not enough things that almost everyone has or conflicting names. And, actually, each above circumstance has only happened twice in over 10 years.
Walking away does not make you popular, but, hey... it's MY commission.

for my state, we can't accept expired gov't issued ID's or
DL.
AND that totally blows. I get so many phone calls from family members of seniors and seniors themselves who are not mobile, that need notary public services. I feel for them.
I've written to our SOS asking them to make some sort of exception for our seniors...but have heard nothing yet...
